Actions with no purpose

I come to check this forum daily. Sometimes in a day or two. Anyway it takes my time so I'd like to put it on my @Home list as a fun item. But I can't formulate an outcome (why am I doing this) and the criteria when that would be done. Am I a GTDholic?

Just to add. For example, I have "Read new posts on DavidCo for 15 minutes". When done I can't delete this action as it's still valid... And that's for any fun activity like walk or read....

Well, if you're remembering to do it, it doesn't need to be on a list (just as you don't need a Next Action to eat your next meal or go to bed).

That said, if you want to track this in GTD, an outcome might be "Read GTD Forum every day" or "Stay at least 48 hours up-to-date on GTD forum topics."

I visit the forum regularly without defining an action to do so on my @Computer list. I'm simply interested in learning new ideas and helping others on their GTD journey. I could link these habits to 20,000 ft areas of focus such as self management and perhaps to 40-50,000 values such as contribution. There doesn't always have to be an explicit project between the higher altitudes and the runway.

The same could be said of an exercise program. Yes, you'd have a project to set up one, but once it's on cruise control it's a matter of keeping the habit and periodically setting new goals.

Fun items don't need an outcome. They are their own reward.

Now, if you decide that you are spending entirely too much time at the GTD forum and need to cut back, that would be a good time to figure out what you're trying to accomplish here and limit your reading accordingly.

I subscribed to the forum RSS feed (using Outlook as that's what I've got). I treat the forums and blogs I subscribe to like a second inbox, and try to process it down to zero every day.

Most days I can process the list down to zero. I subscribe to threads I'm interested in for further emails (into inbox) and add actions to write replies to posts if they are going to be any longer than this one!

(There finished this post in just less than 2 minutes - on to the next!)
