I am a total newbie to GTD ... I haven't even finished the book yet. Still, I have slung out loads of clutter, upgraded the software on my Palm and am about to make in-roads into GTD.
On the desktop side of things I have all the usual Mac software as well as Entourage. I am (almost) willing to move to Ent to get things like categories shifted to contacts. The main reason for not is the lack of "Mail Tags" and Smart folders. I am an addict for labelling things "to pay", "serial", "login" and so on. I then use rules to sort these into Smart Folders. Is there a way of doing this in Ent? I could use e2sync and run Ent alongside Mail+, but why complicate things? Another reason for sticking with iCal etc is the integration of kGTD and OmniOutliner.
So, should I change or can I get GTD to work with the Apple apps?

Thanks

As a Mac user I currently do not see the need to use program other than the Apple supplied ones (i.e. iCal, Address Book, Mail etc).

For task and calendar management you may want to get a copy of August 2006 MacWorld. Merlin Mann (of 43 Folders) has a story on "How to do a to-do list" using either iCal or Ent. It's a good intro, influenced by DA work.

On a general note, I would recommend that you stay with the programs you know. The learning curve will be shorter and you're more likely to stay on track with implementing the DA work flow.

Phew. I just read so many posts about iCal not being up to the job. Then there is the guide to using Entourage available.

I'll have a look, but I'm in the UK so the articles are not always the same

Always a good idea! I have had Ent for several versions, but the addition of Smart folders etc swings Mail into better waters

If only I could get going ... I've spent most of my first week nGTD ("notGTD") ... just filling up the recycling skip with more paper each day!

Thanks for the advice

Using a mac.

Hi there,
I am using a mac set-up. I use ical, addressbook, and apple mail, which all integrate nicely with each other. I don't use the tasks in ical. Rather, I bought LifeBalance by llamagraphics and put all my lists and contexts in there. I set-up LifeBalance carefully according to some instructions I found in this forum. I sync it with my Treo (Palm software) whenever I leave home (I have a home office and two work offices). It all syncs up nicely. For more involved project planning, I'll use other mac software like excel, word, mindjet mind manager, google notebook or backpackit.com. This all depends upon the context of the project (where I'll be working on it).

With all the tools available for list management on the web, using a Mac for GTD has become simpler and much more cross-platform (for example if you had to use a PC at work).

Hope that helps. Feel free to ping me w/ specific questions.

I love the mac tools and miss them when I'm on a PC.

I have Shadow Plan on the Palm to sync with the Mac (hopefully OmniOutliner too when I can sort out OmniShadow), and I have the Windows version on the PC at work
mindjet mind manager...
I had the trial of this. With it not importing OPML (from Omni) nor having a Palm version I use Inspiration ... or a pack of coloured pens!
Hope that helps
Sure does!
Thanks

Since you are new to GTD I would recommend starting with ical, AB & Mail. They are great basic programs to corral your to do's, random business card info and emails. These programs are great for categorizing and sorting your "stuff".

Down the line, if you need to use something more sophisticated, you can import and/or sync these programs into almost all mac pims and crms.

I am using Daylite right now to manage my business and personal info: projects, calendars and contact. But, I still sync all this to AB & ical as a backup.

Good luck with GTD.
