Biggest breakthru??? Hmmmm......
My biggest breakthroughs were:
1-Learning to put everything in the in box. I always used to leave stuff out, now it all goes in there. I like the concept of the "one messy place" concept. Otherwise, your house turns into your inbox.
2-Being able to find pieces of papers within seconds. I am amazed by the amount of time I used to spend looking for a certain piece of paper. Either I spent 1-3 hours looking for it, and then I would have to pay for a duplicate, and then later on find the original copy. I have heard of people knocking GTD because they "spend too much time organizing". Those little bits of organizing are like little stones that build a huge dam to keep the water (disorganization) out of your city. Trust me, the organizing pays off in the long run. I can find anything lightning fast now. The teachers (I am a teacher.) that work with me are amazed at how organized I am and how clean my desk is.
3-Valuing clear space/simplifying/decluttering. Before GTD, I never used to have a clean desk. A clean desk brings calm and harmony into my life. I also like the fact that you can trash a lot of things before they start clogging up your life. My desk/office is a clutter free zone with lots of clear space!!! I love it!!
4-I like how detailed oriented GTD is. Everything is a O or 1. Yes or no. Very digital and decision oriented. I love the GTD work flow flowchart, I have it posted in my office.
5-I totally loved the suggestion about the labelers. I can easily read all my files, and I enjoy working with them. This gives my office that "crisp and clean" (no caffeine?) look, and I love it!!
6-I finally realized that organization and time management are skills that can be learned. I guess I had never been taught. I struggled through Franklin Covey and I pondered my "roles and goals" but my desk was a total mess and that stressed me out. I used to think that organization/time management was an inborn genetic trait.
7-I like the way GTD allows you to use small scraps of time. Those small scraps quickly build into hours and days. I mean, why wastes 40 minutes in the doctor's waiting room when you could be making calls? GTD is sort of reminds that we have a "ton" of things that we could be doing, so why are we wasting time? Sort of the "Don't just stand there, do something!!" philosophy.
I hope you liked these!!!
