I just got the BB 7510 thru Nextel.

I upgraded to BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.0.0.202 at

https://www.blackberry.com/SoftwareDownload/indexProcess.jsp

And, voila, categories are there for tasks, notes & calendar. Cool!

Only problem for now for me:

The newest BB desktop manager version I found is version 3.6.2.9 - and when I want to map categories to categories in the task sync under intellisync/configure PIM/configure/advanced settings/fieldmapping, there is no default choice for 'categories' on the handheld side (but only on the outlook side)....

ANY THOUGHTS???

Thank you,

Falk

PS: Also: any ideas on how to implement the distinction Projects/Actions?
I was thinking of just categorizing actions, since context is paramount for me on the go...

Ok, I give the anser to myself... ;P

I found the desktop version 4 on the blackberry site (and it synced smoothly, automatically taking all my Outlook categories... Cool!)
The nextel BB guys (or nextel site) didn't even know about the existence of V 4 (for desktop manager). Duh.....

Falkwillis,

I recently upgraded my desktop manager as well as my ATTWS (now Cingular) blackberry 7280. I went to map the categories but there is not a "category" field to map to on the handheld side. Did you run into this?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

What version of handheld software are you running on your BB? I am toying with the idea of writing a long post or short article on how to use the Blackberry with GTD utilizing categories. I have been using the 7290 for about a month now and have almost weaned myself from my PPC and Agenda fusion. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles of a Palm or PPC but gets the job done efficiently and with far less "fiddling", one of my primary timewasters and geeky way of procrastinating.

Do you think there is any interest on this forum for such an article?

I do :)

I would like to know how well your BB is working out for you. Have been using them so long, but a much older version. I need to get up to speed on the new devices out there to get version 4 I think.

The 7290 is working out well. I will write a longer post later but to enter a task into a category it goes like this. All you have to do is enter a new task like on any Blackberry, then scroll down to categories. You can choose one of the default categories or create your own such as @computer. Select than category by highlighting it and pressing spacebar or the click wheel. The categories sync with Outlook just fine. To view only the tasks in a particular category, you can select filter, then click the category you wish to view. To show all tasks again, click filter and deselect the category you had selected above, all tasks will be listed again. Not quite as user friendly as the Palm or PPC but definitely usable in a GTD manner and only 1 device to carry around. You can use the other functions on the BB while on the phone too. I use a bluetooth headset that works well with my 7290. Now if they just get a good ebook reader and program that would sync with microsoft money, I could ditch my ppc.

PSTMSTR,

I would be very interested in an article about using the Blackberry with GTD categories. I saw your second post in this thread, but I would be interested in reading more with your thoughts and experiences using the Blackberry with GTD.

My BB will be delivered next week, and I will be attempting to utilize for my GTD system. I will let you know how it goes.
