Choosing actions instead of doing what was planned

I feel internal vibration when I think of my to-do list. I have projects (10) and next actions (54). I don't make projects for next actions like "Meet with financial manager because she wanted me to get into her office to discuss some work related issues". That's why I have difference between project and next action lists.

Now I have 54 next actions. 16 are on Agenda lists that keep agendas for scheduled meetings. 6 is homework like "put words from a new spanish lesson into my IPhone for review". 6 on Waiting list after todays Weekly Review. And 26 on my @Work list. I don't split it into Calls, Computer etc. because I have access to all the tools mostly 80% of the time.

Now I have 2 major problems that are caused by something in me:

- I'm not interested in doing my @Homework. There're only 6 items there that sit there for years already. As David Allen told our most interesting work stays outside of our lists :) My more interesting work is watching TV. Is it a shame? I don't feel shame but I feel nervous for spending my time useless...

- I have problem in choosing what to do first on my @Work list. It has 26 Next Actons. Some of them small like "Write a draft of the sales report" (takes 15-20 minutes). But most of them are small calls with following meetings like "Call financial manager to setup a meeting because she asked me to". I tried different approaches to choosing what to do: start from the first and go down the list or find the most important one. Still feel unsatisfied at the end of the day because with noth methods I somehow avoid really the most important actions (stop before them with the first approach or choose "seems to be important instead of the real importace" with the second) and feel guilty at the end of the day...

I'm tired of that. What's wrong with me?

You have now a great opportunity and you are looking for your way. I had a big advantage reading Making it all work.

Is watching TV really interesting?

Is watching TV really interesting? Do you learn something important? Does it improve your level of fitness?

It is interesting but no more :) As you say it doesn't improve my outlook. But it gives me pleasant moments of sitting and getting pleasure. Maybe it is the addiction that moves me to unpleasant final like drugs or smoking? It provides pleasure in the moment but killing in the perspective? Comparing to fitness - fitness is boring, tough...

Is watching TV really interesting?

Yes! I find it relaxing and entertaining most of the time.

Do you learn something important?

Sometimes. And sometimes I don't. It's not how I measure why I watch TV.

I love fitness too and love to read books too. To each his/her own.

Hi Tychinin

There is nothing wrong with you!

I think we all have trouble doing some things, particularly home items if the TV is more interesting. Sometimes your brain is toast after a long day and TV is exactly what you need to try to unwind - you certainly shouldn't feel bad about that.

If you find that you are repelled by your @Homework list you might want to think about whether you really want to do those actions any more. What is important to you may have changed since you put the actions on the list. It might be good to take each item in isolation and decide whether it is still something that is important:
- if it is, perhaps you need to drill down to an even smaller action to get it going, or look at a really positive outcome to motivate you to do it
- if it is something you don't want to drop, but don't have the mental space for it at the moment, move it to Someday/Maybe so that it stops niggling at you to do it
- if it doesn't figure as important at all, drop it!

I hope that this helps.
Best wishes
Sarah

I certainly dont wanna sound like an insufferable do-gooder, but the quality of my life jumped when I got rid of the telly a few years ago. It seems relaxing, but its only when you get rid of it that you realise it keeps your brain ticking over at this level slightly above relaxation all the time, without ever being able to let go. the constant noise, the way programs keep you hooked, the noise of adverts. 10 minutes breathing and meditating is far more relaxing than 2 hours telly, if relaxation is what you're after.

TV programs are great an' all, i download things to my laptop sometimes, but its not as relaxing as people think.

do homework elsewhere...

If you are talking about school work type homework, many people find they study best where other people are studying, such as a library. I personally find coffee shops way too noisy, but I see a lot of people of all ages, studying in them. I think that all the cues in your home are inviting you to do anything but homework.

You may also find, that if you put the remote in some inconvenient place, you won't want to bother with TV.

And, just perhaps, and there is no shame in it, e, you really want to work in something with TV (you are drawn to the medium) or in a place where a TV is on (bar tending, nursing home, electronics shop, or have your own small retail or repair store where you can have a TV going). A factor in my hardware store guy switching from being a building inspector to owning a hardware store was so he could listen to opera and classical music all day at work.

You are absolutely right!

My wife and I don't have cable and really prefer not having it. However, it is funny how the web is starting to creep in as it's replacement.

TV? I don't need it!

I used to watch news on TV. Now Internet gives me more news in the areas that I am interested in.

I used to watch weather reports on TV. Now Internet gives me updated weather information that I need.

I used to watch movies on TV. Now I feel that I've seen all the interesting movies. And I can buy or rent DVDs with classics like "Fight Club", "Groundhog Day", "Negotiator" etc.

I really don't need a regular TV anymore. Even when Steve Wozniak is "Dancing With The Stars". :-)
