Confused

I've been implementing GTD for about 9 mo. I already had a PALM so used that. This week my Palm failed.. Hot Sync stopped working and after 2 different chats with tech support, it still doesn't sync.. lots of installing, uninstalling, installing.. very frustrating.

Long story short, my most updated stuff is on the computer and can't get to my handheld. I need to make a change. Hesitant to get another PALM.. there are things I don't like about it.

Looking at all the other stuff, reviews, etc. Down the road I will be getting a MAC but not for awhile, though I can use my husbands if need be.

THought about I Touch.. I'm confused by the pros and cons. Use with Omni or Action Lists Aps... the synching.. so overwhelming... any thoughts?

Also, not sure what to do inthe meantime.. print my lists and use paper? Just the thought makes me anxious.

My personal suggestion is to switch to paper at least for now. If you go mac then I think Omnifocus is excellent but there are many choices. For now though you need something so you can keep going and paper will at least keep you running while you decide.

Make a project to find a new GTD tool and get started.

But keep yourself on the path to improvement by saving all that you've done on paper for now. :-)

Happy with my choices !

I have noticed that I always keep my notes, things to do, even calendar at several places, to be sure not to lose them.
This last year, I got used to Mac book, I phone, Mobile Me and Omnifocus. I found great that all my informations are everywhere, so if something happens, I can found my informations else where. ( It happens this summer, during one month, my mobileme sync did not work properly, but I really could handle it easily ).
So I suggest you to go back to paper and pen, and choose news tools that suit you better.
I can just tell you that I am very happy of my choices and I can recommend it to you !
Good luck ! Heleneushka

information everywhere can be convenient but can also have privacy issues.

ipod touch is a cost effective solution. i am GTD mostly on my ipod touch

- great place to capture information since you have it everywhere
- check out toodledo, remember the milk, appigo todo. they allow syncing online so that u will always be able to assess it anywhere.

i am for switching to paper based as well.

One of the strong points of GTD is that it is a platform-independent methodology, so to speak. What is most important now is that you have saved your data pertaining to your GTD system. You could and should reconstruct your GTD system in any form available to you at this moment, be it a PC and a paper printout, or a pen and paper, so you could continue your work while looking for an appropriate portable device/appliance.

I agree with suggestions about making a project on deciding on your portable/handheld device, but I don't think anyone unfamiliar with both current technology and your specific needs could give you the definite answer as to which portable device you should use. Technology changes so rapidly, with all kinds of smartphones, netbooks and other portable devices/appliances, so you can't count with certainty on a specific hardware to be usable in the long run. You should avoid investing in a thing that might get rendered useless after a month or so -- of course, that's just common sense, yet I am amazed by the number of people not realizing it.

And yes, the only devices I currently use for GTD are a PC + printer and a non-smart Nokia phone, and it works for me, but YMMV. Naturally, I will expand my GTD system to other devices, but I am not in such a hurry about it, since if I were in a hurry, I'd definitely make a mistake.

Continue your work and good luck.

Don't be anxious about using paper for your GTD set-up. It works amazingly well and is very adaptable to most anything you will need it to do for you. Imagine that - paper!:p

I agree with the idea of trying paper. I switch systems multiple times per year (unfortunately) but have been maintaining a paper system and a set of text docs for my work computer lists. I got tired of synching, trying to use outlook tasks, and needing to be online just to check my NA lists...

Having in the past suffered occasional data loss or sync problems or hardware failure, I added this to my weekly review checklists:

Print out my lists and store in project support materials. Recycle the old when I put in the new.

Note - I don't work from these lists unless disaster strikes - they are there to remove the anxiety. Getting my exchange data restored by the IT folks can take between hours and days. Recovering from pouring a drink over my personal PDA might take even longer :???:

I like this idea, as another paranoid backup person I'm already doing offsite backups but it might take a few days to get them back and get running again. I think I may adopt your method as well, thanks for sharing.
