Counting email

I'm curious to find out the volume of email I receive and send each day. Does anyone know of an easy way to do this? I've seen sample's of an article by Sue Mosher MVP but can't find the full article.

A lot of that probably depends on how you get your email, i.e. which client and which mail server. Since I'm getting mine through a linux box, and it is being filtered by procmail prior to delivery, I use a tool included on most *nix machines called 'mailstat' to analyze my daily mail log. I get an email every morning with the stats for the prior day, or in cases like this, it can also be run interactively, e.g.

if you use Outlook

Just do a search. Go into advanced search and look at all emails received Yesterday. As long as you haven't done a permanent delete it should list all emails received yesterday. Or alternatively you could do it at the end of the day and search todays.

If you have a simple Outlook folder structure, for example:

Inbox
- Action Required
- Reference
Sent Items

then try this:

1. Right-click on a group header (e.g. "Today" or "Yesterday")
2. Click "Open Items"

You'll get a message asking whether you really want to open X items, where X is the number under that group header. Very quick.

I still use Eudora and you can see years worth of statistics in the Tools/Statistics menu item.
