Environmental Motivation

Hi all,

Virgin poster here...have been practising GTD for past 12 months or so and seem to be working well with it, but always room to improve and evolve. Recently have a new iPad 2 and trying to find my app of choice for my trusted system.

I thought I would ask a question to those out there about Environmental Motivation.

What is it that you need to have, like to have, must not have, in your personal environment in order to maintain focus and stay "in the zone"?

Regards,

Simon.

My iPhone. It was what introduced me to GTD in the first place through the Pocket Informant app. Also use it as a capture tool.
For being completely productive, I love to have my folder and a pen and notepad as well, and laptop not far away.

Thanks all for your replies.

I was probably more thinking along the lines of...

...do you have any favorite music that you like to listen to to keep you in the zone?
...do you keep specific items in your workspace for motivation?
...do you deliberately not have certain things because they are too much of a distraction?

I simply focus on the task and the world disappears.

Sometimes I like music -- no words -- just instrumental -- artists like Pat Metheny or Chet Baker are good.

Much of the time, I can do the same. (which is a good thing, because my workspace often is cluttered and distracting)

For particularly challenging tasks (where the task seems to be designed to push me OUT of the zone, where the task seems to be full of clutter and noise), I like an uncluttered workspace -- at least my physical environment is clean and sane :)

I like music sometimes, but often forget. I have a playlist of uptempo music for packing for trips.
I find Demotivators funny, but don't have any.
What could have more potential for distraction than my computer?

So overall I am not particularly sensitive to environment.

Peace and quiet. Although that in itself is sometimes really hard to get, especially at home. I like to use Centrepointe's Holosync cds, they have one called 'Alpha Super Focus' which is good to get your mind focussed.
