First PDA - Palm T|X

Hello. I would like to know what you think of the Palm T|X as a first PDA. Is it a good choice ? I intend to use it for GTD mainly and I want to choose a good gadget to help me because I don't intend to change it for the next 3-5 years or so.

Thank you for your input.

I use a Palm TX, but it's main limitation for me is not being able to assign two categories to one entry e.g. a context and an area of focus. I also like to be able to see a list of projects as well as NAs, which I have to do on Outlook.

It's basically great as a portable NA list/diary/address book/memo pad, not sophisticated enough for when I'm doing my weekly review and want an overview of projects etc

It depends on what you want. At this time, it's Palm's top of the line PDA, with many features. Try it extensively at a store before you buy.

I would say a 2 to 3-year lifespan estimate is reasonable (get a good case and screen protectors). It would probably be your last PDA as well as your first, because traditional PDA's are probably going away within the same time frame, replaced by smartphones/media devices (iPod Touch). These devices have some of the same capabilities, but are less work-oriented.

Key Suite

I've used Palms for years and a while ago I moved off the Palm Desktop in favor of Outlook. When I did that I also tried Key Suite to synch Outlook and my Treo 650. I mainly went to Outlook because of how poorly the Palm Desktop works with high resolution monitors but now with the GTD Outlook Add-in and Key Suite I've got a complete GTD solution (FOR ME).

Two things I really love about Key Suite are the rock-solid sync capability and the applications on the handheld which add some useful Outlook features but still maintain the functionality of "plain vanilla" Palm apps. They look like the way I think Palm SHOULD have progressed.

This is something to put on your radar screen but maybe not right away. I'm always cautious of making too much technology change too quickly.

Again, something to consider but the Palm software and handheld are very capable GTD list-making tools as is.

Mark

PS -- I don't do this but Key Suite enables multiple categories for a Task item.

Thank you all for the replies.

I forgot to mention that I may buy third party software to help me but at the moment I just want to settle on a good PDA. Provided that I choose the right tools, the PDA itself is ok ?

Basically, what I want the PDA to do is GTD and also store contacts with it.
I don't want to play games, listen to music or anything like that. Not with it anyway :)

I've been using the Palm TX for GTD for about 2 years now and like yourself, that's the only thing I use it for.

Lists: NAs, Projects, Someday/Maybe, Waiting for, etc
These are easy because there's a program called Docs To Go that allows easy syncing with your PC at work and/or home. So you can edit the lists when you're sitting at your computer or on the go.

Calendar/Ticker file:
I use the calendar on the Palm as my GTD calendar and tickler file. The calendar syncs with Yahoo calendar, so when I'm in front a computer I review and update the calendar on Yahoo, and when I'm on the go I use the Palm.

I wouldn't worry about screen protectors etc - this thing is meant to make your life easier not add more hassles. I've been throwing it in my jeans pocket for years now and it's very robust, haven't had any problems.

I'd definitely recommend getting this Palm if you don't mind paying for lots of features then only using 10% of them (like me)!

Thank you rangi500 for your input. I'd better buy something with more features that I may need later than something that has exactly what I need now and later find out that I need more features. Besides, being my first PDA, I think the TX is a pretty good choice.

I'm still open for suggestions but I incline in favour of the TX.

You can pry my T/X from my cold dead hand... I love mine. Works great for plain vanilla GTD implementation. The only thing I miss is the T/X does not have the voice recorder my Tungsten T3 had. I do miss that. The WiFi is a nice feature though...

The T|X is a nice, solid PDA. I loved the large screen and the Wifi on mine, and the ability to use landscape view. I just wanted to integrate a phone so I got a Treo. I highly recommend the T|X
