Google Calendar has launched built-in Sync to Outlook calendar

I'm curious as to how you would use this - why do you need both outlook calendar and google calendar? In order to sync you will need an active internet connection, so for people who cannot access the internet on their outlook computer, this feature is useless. For those who do have internet access, it just seems like unnecessary duplication because they can already access GC.
Unless this synched mail, to-dos, etc., I don't see the point. Maybe I'm just missing something?

Seems to me many people would benefit from being able to sync their calendar commitments from work (which they can't see anywhere else potentially) with a Google calendar containing all their other commitments that can be viewed anywhere (and that could be subsequently synchronised with another instance of Outlook outside of work if internet access isn't constant).
Particularly handy for those who choose to do their weekly review over the weekend.

I´ve gone into my google calender but can´t see how I can synchronise. How do you do it? I´m in the UK. Is this facility given internationally?
I agree it could be useful for those of us who want to add our work outlook appointments to our social ones on our home/google calender. But would it be possible to do this without the social appointments going on to my work calender. I don't want appointments to 'ring my doctor', or job interviews getting on to my shared work calender. Usually a sync is a two way process.

Major Google Calender sync problems
Long story short...
Google Sync isn't yet a robust 2-way sync. The real kicker is, that now that I've un-installed the sync .exe file, I can no longer make any changes to my online Google Calender. Needless to say, my whole hard landscape is stored there, and I'm scrambling for an alternative. So much for jumping into the beta with both feet.

It´s great it can be only one way. Does that actually mean that appointments on the target calender are not erased if they aren´t on the calender sending the appointments? I guess it does.
I found a link to download the sync, and with instructions to make it work.
And it's worked on a two way sync! This could be a great tool! I´ll try out the one way sync from my Outlook work calender at work on Monday, if I can persuade the company to let my download it.
