GTD Travel Folders

I just wanted to throw out a post seeing how people use their traveling file folders. Best practices etc? I use them everyday coming and going from work, but lately, I have been wanting to try to trim down "overhead" on my system by reducing how much stuff I carry. Thoughts?

It's been discussed in these forums before, but the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanners work very well for digitizing most of your paper-based inventory. You can digitize an entire file drawer in less than an hour or two. It looks like they also offer a portable version of the scanner now too.

That would cut down on much of what is in your GTD travel folders. But it also takes time. After practicing GTD for over 5 years now, I had very thick folders the first year, but subsequently they have rarely grown over 1 inch thick since then.

I've got a ScanSnap but I've never managed to scan that much stuff in that timeframe!

How do you manage that level of throughput?

Best I've been able to do is 8 hours for 1/2 of a bankers box of reference material. And I'm not making most of what I scan indexed PDF but just straight ones as that is a lot faster. For most things I won't be referencing them unless we get audited. I'm still working on a backlog of 6 bankers boxes of stuff I'm required to keep and haven't even tackled the real reference material yet that I need to be searchable.

I'm trying to do a file or 2 a day to keep plugging away at it. I'd love tips on how you manage a must faster system.
