Help with purpose/outcome

Maybe a stupid one but... I'd like to experience pleasure when looking at myself in a mirror :) I thought I need at least three projects to fulfill that: sunbathe regulary, go in for bodybuilding and fitness. First, I think I need an outliner to keep them all together under "experience pleasure when looking at myself in a mirror" project as it useless to keep the upper level project in the Projects List?

Could you please help me formulate purpose/outcome for each of the projects? I'd like to put them into Notes section of each of the projects to ensure better motivation :)

Regards,

Eugene.

Well, this is something I think many people are probably working through at this time of year, but here's my two cents.

1) Sunbathe regularly - Purpose/Outcome - to be able to look in the mirror without being blinded by the ghostly white reflection (at least, when you're as pale as I am, that's a decent goal)

2) Go in for bodybuilding - This one is a little tougher, as you probably need to clarify your overall goal. A good way to clarify this is are you looking end up being able to benchpress volkswagens or just trim up around the midsection? And if the Volkswagen is the eventual goal, perhaps might be better to start with things like mopeds, motorcycles, Smart Cars, etc.

3) Improve fitness - again, needs a little clarification. Are you just looking to be able to reach the office after climbing the stairs and not be out of breath, or is a Marathon in the cards?

But all in all, that's a good way to break down the overall goal, actually, something I'll probably adopt in my own quest for self-improvement!

Thanks!

yes, yes

This is exactly what GTD should help us to do. Or at least free up the psychic ram so we can do these things--

I'm working on it.
Trish:)

Yes, heartily so. Ghostly white reflection here too, despite being in the middle of an Adelaide summer (maximum today was 40 Celsius, that's 104 Fahrenheit. Hot). But if I were to go out into the sun, I'd look like Tutankhamun's mummy in about 15 minutes, UV ratings being what they are down here. I'll just have to think tanned.

And far from being able to bench press a Volkswagon, I think I could just about bench press my 2 cats. But only if they didn't wriggle about.

Still, it's all on my list...

Sorry for a longer list of projects. I didn't expect such a support of my activities but I just wanted all of you to help me formulate the Outcome and Purpose :) so:

1. Do you think that i.e. for bodybuilding the Purpose should sound like "Make prelum abdominale muscles visiable till the end of the year"? :)

2. Do you think that i.e. for sunbathing the Outcome should sound like: "Expirience pleasure when I see my nice body in a mirror"? :)

3. Don't I mix the terms Purpose and Outcome?

4. Should I have upper level project "Experience pleasure from my overall view" somewhere in Project lists or other list or lower above mentioned projects are enough?

5. What should be a connection between all the layers from 50K to 0K look like for i.e. bodibuilding: 50K - experience pleasure from life, 40K - make a body that makes me smile when I see it in the mirror, 30K - make prelum abdominale muscles; 20K (roles) - ?????, 10K - go to gym, read special literature, eat healthy food, etc, 0K - go to gym at 10-00 am :) ?

6. What should 20K (roles) in point 5 sound like for this kind of project?

Regards,

Eugene.

Hey, no need to apoligize. As I'm looking at adding a few of these to my lists as well, its a good way for me to combine my own personal brainstorming with browsing the forum, which is always nice :)

1. I think that is more of an outcome than a purpose, the purpose would be on that higher level, of being happier with your personal appearance. Perhaps a secondary purpose could be developed as well, such as something specific for that muscle group. Even if its something lighthearted (a la wanting washboard abs to do the laundry on, etc.), if it can get you in a positive mood towards your desired outcome, then it can be beneficial.

2. The outcome for sunbathing can be different. Part of it depends on how much you're looking to do. If its just something along the lines of get more colour so that when you actually do have a little colour people stop remarking that you look so healthy ("Did I really look that unhealthy before? I know I was a little closer to the zombie end of the colour scale, but seriously!") Or are you looking to be nice and tanned and dark? I think by clarifying the goal, you might be able to stick to it more easily, as then you've got something measureable to work towards. If its just, I want to be happier looking in the mirror, if you're comfortable being able to decide when you're happier with your appearance, then its all good, otherwise, smaller steps might be easier to work towards.

3. The purpose/outcome debate is something I'm working to clarify myself. If there is one big hole in my GTD implementation, its that I don't work enough to visualize wild success, (and I noticed a post about just recently) and that I find that I don't always see the higher altitudes as well as I should. But I think in a lot of cases, the outcome can be the purpose, if the outcome is clearly developed.

4. I'd have both the overall project and the lower level projects on the list. Sometimes just having the final picture in sight can help the lower projects move forward.

5. As this is something that I'm working on clarifying myself, not sure if I can help with the structure. But if that fits in with your 0-50K, then go for it.

6. Perhaps for a role, something along the lines of "be a healthy person/personal health"?

Sorry for the long post, but hope you can find something in there that might help!

Good luck!

Adam

bump it up

I would argue that this is a 20,000 Level Area of Focus, a personal standard that you want to keep up. Projects and actions would then flow from that "stake in the ground". It would make the outcomes of the projects easier to define that way... thoughts?

helpful

All this I am finding to be so helpful to me. I have just realized how important it is for me to journal---which I am doing right now as I brew another pot of coffee---and when I journal I clarify goals, purpose, and wild success...all in my own words, and get to see on paper what all is there. Right now I am I am writing all about what my goals are with my writing behavior---I won't even say writer's block---but behavior, and I have clarified my desired outcome, which I don't think I ever did as clearly before. Now I know when I have crossed that line. It's a personal growth thing, how I will feel, how I will know. Now to go back and work on the steps, er, brainstorm possible steps. I am in the middle of a novel, and oh, the resistance! Success with another book has brought me all sorts of good things---distractions---well, I'm not a novice, but there is a lot to explore on the resistance front, and a lot to brainstorm about how to move out of this stuck-place.

The Man in The Mirror - A Sunbathing Story

Hi Eugene.

Thought I'd practice some outcome writing and have some fun. Here's my contribution to the "Man in the Mirror" for sunbathing. I hope that it helps.
When I look in the mirror and see my tan, I end up with a huge smile on my face that brings me deep pleasure. Why? Because it means I am taking care of myself by sunbathing on a regular basis. It is my time of reflection. The warmth of the sunshine (or heat rays) soaks into the very core of my mind, body and spirit. Sunbathing is nurturing and penetrates me with feelings of wellness and health. When I am feeling well, then my work and personal lifestyle is incredibly productive, well balanced and financially successful. I am able to get the right stuff done everyday.

My financial success has allowed me to purchase tanning equipment for my brand new home spa, complete with a fitness center and bodybuilding equipment. I also have a work office with a window that faces the southern sun for my daily fifteen minute "lean back in my office chair sunbathing breaks." I am now starting to accept seminar engagements for thousands of dollars to share my simple sunbathing techniques. I donate the proceeds to special needs organizations. I am so glad that I included sunbathing in my GTD projects!
May you enjoy the warmth of the sun!

Nancy

P.S. Now I just have to start writing some new outcomes for myself!

Nancy, excellent! I will put in it a frame on my wall :)

But it doesn't look like outcome - it's more of a vision :)

Could you please make that real outcome and purpose statements? ;)

Regards,

Eugene.

purpose vs outcome

For the sake of clear analyses and thinking, you might seperate purpose and outcome. But, in practice sometimes they will not always be distinct, but, it is really important to keep clarifying the purpose or you can get off track and thinking through the outcome. A simple example, you go to buy milk and come home with 4 bags of groceries. While it should certainly be okay to change your purpose you might want to think about the real outcome (and that includes the gain plus the cost) and try to keep the outcome and purpose aligned.

Project:Replace a leaky old window.

Your purpose= be warmer.

Your outcome= +new plain window/ -$400.00

or

Your purpose= be warmer, make window easier clean.

Your outcome=+new fancy tilting window/-500.00

Project: renew professional certificate

Purpose: to maintain credentials so can maintain employment
Outcome: same

But here, you might add to the outcome something like time frame for doing it early enough to do by mail without interview, and thus minimize the stress and cost.

Project: Tidy living room

Purpose: make it look better, more comfortable and functional
Outcome: same/-1 hour of time

Purpose: as above, PLUS know where I put the things I removed and make the clutterers more accountable.
Outcome: same, -2hours (take notes and return items to their right places, make places and label if needed).

I have found in meetings where people are getting nowhere or bringing up examples that are supposed to show that something can't be done, that tactfully bringing to light theunintended bifurcation of the purpose from the outcome can be helpful. I need to work on the tactful!

By the way, although sun feels good and tans look great, as one who has had skin cancer, I would suggest that you weigh the pros and cons. I am told that sometimes the special light used for Season Affective Disorder helps suntan "addicts" get unhooked. But, I have also read that certain colors in the SAD lights' spectrum (blue?), cause cateracts and other vision problems.
