Home routine

Do you use any routine for your afterwork hours? Mine is:

- Come home
- Sports (not every day though)
- Dinner
- Home work (1-2 next actions)
- Family time

Nearly everyone will have a routine. The bigger question is whether they chose them conciously or just let them form themselves.
 
I have a morning and an evening checklist, they're both quite long. The morning one has 32 items, the evening one has 50 items. They're roughly in the order I would like to do them.
 
I'm big on the routine. I actually have a checklist in MS Excel and I can print off my routine and check it off during the day. It's got one for the morning, reminders for during the day, and an evening routine.

50! is that 'possibles' or 'do them alls'? Could you give me a snapshot of a couple?
 
There's 50 because they're quite small items. They're checklist items, not a to do list, I just like to read all the things I could/should do on a daily basis and make a concious decision about them each night.

Kettle on
Water pot plants
Empty compost bin
Change clothes
Air house
fetch lunchbooxes
clothes to laundry
washing on
cook dinner
etc
 
I'm quiete messy with my routine after work, all I do is just list all important things that I really need to do so that I wont forget it. I use some online tool to keep me organize at my daily routine. I start with cooking dinner when I got home.:D
 
My morning routine

- Turn shower on (takes like 30 sec. for water to warm up)
- Put cup of tea or instant coffee in microwave for 3 min.
- Hop in shower (10-15 min.)
- Sync new podcasts to iPod shuffle
- Get dressed while looking through Next Actions (in Things app on my iPad). Star/Unstar items for today.
- Check weather/overnight Twitter feed. Star interesting things to Read Later (literally). Should take no more than 10 min.
- Drink coffee/tea/Have a quick breakfast
- Check if briefcase has everything I need for the day
- Go to work

(I try to do stuff like put Trash out or run the dryer to have clothes I need the night before)
 
I've been a big believer in routines, but I now think they're best left for work hours only. Years fly by while we strive for future goals, and we forget to live. It's a real shame if we can't be spontaneous, and make decisions on what to do in the moment, even though this can be less "efficient" in terms of our goals on lists. Not every part of the most precious parts of life can be listed, planned, or done regularly as part of a routine. Routines, or always having something to do, can crowd out or prevent the most special moments from happening.

Striving for efficiency, and "GTD" in daily life tends to result in a neglect of living. Life's too short, and we should be relaxed about doing things slowly. We should be free to spontaneously walk outside and enjoy a thunder storm, spontaneously pick up a book and read, or stare at the clouds and daydream, without a thought of what to get done now/next spoiling these most precious moments of life.

BTW, I think it's great to have lots of regular scheduled time for family--that's most important, especially for the ambitious. I wasn't talking about that. And planned spontaneity isn't the same as when natural and free. :)

I have understood that one good thing about GTD is that when you know you have all your commitments written down, you can relax and enjoy life because you can be certain that nothing blows up if take rest of the day off.

great thoughts. I also like to schedule family time daily (isn't it a routine?). And we need to be spontaneous but have to follow some routines to support our living (sports, showering, brushing etc).
