How do/did you GTD the 2024 election?

As I write this (11/1/2024), it is 4.5 days until the polls close, and I'm trying to "GTD" the election, because it has my attention.

OK. I've written "Tuesday's election" on a 3 x 5 card and tossed it in my inbox. But I'm still pretty new to GTD, so I'm not sure how to proceed.

I know I'm not the only one on this forum who has had "Election" their inbox recently, and I'm interested in knowing how others have moved on to "Clarify".

I'm not asking for a political discussion. I just want others to share how they used the GTD methodology when "Election" landed in their inbox.

This may be one of the most consequential elections in US history. If you haven’t clarified your fundamental values at the highest level, I guess starting now is better than the alternatives. I think I’m fairly well informed, and my values are clear. I’ve done what I think I can reasonably do right now. Everything else is in the hands of other people. There is no project, no next action beyond voting. I may spend some time this weekend meditating on Lincoln’s 2nd inaugural address, which is engraved inside the Lincoln memorial along with the Gettysburg address. And above Lincoln is inscribed "In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the Union, the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever".

@densteed

Not 'political' . . . simply on the concept of voting

Here's what someone expressed

If one abstains from voting, then whoever wins, one has implicitly voted to be in office

Vote for the one most likely to lose to simply avoid complicity contributing to the harms-&-misdeeds of the one voted into office with at least some sort of check . . . as in "checks-&-balances" ?

This entered my GTD system as Engage Politically on September 16 2021 and then My Representatives Offices on 11/9/2022. They are both still on my Social Someday Maybe but they both have an outcome specified (which isn't always the case for my someday maybe items). Still, I think that outcome has guided me beyond the initial handling.

This doesn't mean I haven't engaged, I have, just not through my GTD system beyond my inbox clarifying. I have had incoming and dispatched them completely very quickly, taking meaningful action before ever going any further. That relatively small amount of time to take action gave me grounding to handle each new encounter successfully.

Those things on my Someday Maybe list actually allowed me to do interim things and know my GTD system had a reminder to engage when it rose to the level where I can spend enough time. In addition, as other politically based items arrived, I know where I could park them.

I agree with @mcogilvie, the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now for this and every future election. A tickler for January to engage in the 2026 election cycle might also be warranted.

I early voted. So it went on my calendar. I also work the polls as an officer of election. So "Pick up poll materials" went on the calendar the day before. And I scheduled the election from 7am- 9pm on my calendar election day.

As someone based in Europe, I’m not directly involved in the U.S. election process, but here’s how I’d approach it through GTD if I were in your shoes.

First, I’d likely capture a note in my in-basket to offload any pressure or lingering thoughts I have around voting. This step allows my brain to let go of the constant reminders and focus on a trusted system to manage the process.

Then, moving through the GTD workflow, I’d clarify and organize this as a project since voting often involves more than one step. I might title it something like “Vote in alignment with my principles and values…”

From here, I’d use the Natural Planning Model (NPM) to think through the project’s elements, including brainstorming next actions and collecting support information. I’d start by asking myself some clarifying questions:

1. What outcome am I looking for? For some, this might simply be to feel informed or confident in casting their vote.

2. What’s the very next action? Depending on your needs, actions could range from “Research ballot issues” to “Verify polling location and hours” or even “Decide on a media cut-off time” if you want to manage your focus as the day approaches.

3. Is there any supporting material? If you’ve gathered election information or saved reminders, you could organize these as reference material, digitally or physically, so it’s easy to access when you need it.

Once clarified, I’d capture the next action, perhaps something like “Research both programs to understand the pros and cons if my preferred candidate wins.” I’d also add key dates to my calendar, like election day, along with any documents or information I’ll need to complete the voting process.

Hope this helps!

Thanks to all who have replied.

I appreciate the more experienced GTDers who have taken their time to describe their approach to this this ubiquitous inbox filler.
