As I write this (11/1/2024), it is 4.5 days until the polls close, and I'm trying to "GTD" the election, because it has my attention.
OK. I've written "Tuesday's election" on a 3 x 5 card and tossed it in my inbox. But I'm still pretty new to GTD, so I'm not sure how to proceed.
I know I'm not the only one on this forum who has had "Election" their inbox recently, and I'm interested in knowing how others have moved on to "Clarify".
I'm not asking for a political discussion. I just want others to share how they used the GTD methodology when "Election" landed in their inbox.
As someone based in Europe, I’m not directly involved in the U.S. election process, but here’s how I’d approach it through GTD if I were in your shoes.
First, I’d likely capture a note in my in-basket to offload any pressure or lingering thoughts I have around voting. This step allows my brain to let go of the constant reminders and focus on a trusted system to manage the process.
Then, moving through the GTD workflow, I’d clarify and organize this as a project since voting often involves more than one step. I might title it something like “Vote in alignment with my principles and values…”
From here, I’d use the Natural Planning Model (NPM) to think through the project’s elements, including brainstorming next actions and collecting support information. I’d start by asking myself some clarifying questions:
1. What outcome am I looking for? For some, this might simply be to feel informed or confident in casting their vote.
2. What’s the very next action? Depending on your needs, actions could range from “Research ballot issues” to “Verify polling location and hours” or even “Decide on a media cut-off time” if you want to manage your focus as the day approaches.
3. Is there any supporting material? If you’ve gathered election information or saved reminders, you could organize these as reference material, digitally or physically, so it’s easy to access when you need it.
Once clarified, I’d capture the next action, perhaps something like “Research both programs to understand the pros and cons if my preferred candidate wins.” I’d also add key dates to my calendar, like election day, along with any documents or information I’ll need to complete the voting process.
Hope this helps!
