How long do you have to use this system before...

Heh. I've just started reading this forum and still gets twisted in my head. I see everybody talking about their lists of "Not Applicable" items and I wonder if I should be managing mine, too.

I imagine a lawyer always pauses when he follows the GTD Flow chart, and comes to the question "Is it actionable?" *grins*

Well, surely since people are different, some people will take less time to get used to these terms than others, right?

Personally, I tend to spell out "Next Action."
 
I strive to have Next Actions defined at the next "physical and visible" action level and so clear to me that when I scan a lengthy list my reaction is, "yes, I can and need to do that".

It's important to have your projects and NA's (next actions) limited to only those things you've committed to doing.

Not applicable things? I'd suggest making a another decision about those on whether to delete or put on a Someday/Maybe list (S/M). I find the S/M list a very powerful tool ... as long as it's reviewed regularly with all your other lists.

Well, I certainly don't list my "Not Applicable" items. However, making an S/M has a bit of a kinky sound to it.
 
Yes I'd definitely suggest you spell out Someday Maybe and call it that when speaking with others , I was once misunderstood when I referred to something as S/M in an email [did it without thinking ] ... Once is enough ; )

It stops meaning "Not Applicable" when you become a Senior Member of the forum :)
