How to name your 5 year / 2017 plan... ?

Hey guys and gals i'm just wondering how other people name there long term plans that are more then 5 years away ?
Right now i've just got:
"5 Year Plan - 2017"
or should it be "2017", or just "5 Year Plan" ?
Like do YOU base it on a particular year ? or just think about it in terms of 5 years away ?

This is really your 40,000 ft horizon of focus. It's a long-term vision of your life and your world. Long term direction for your career, family and other areas of your life fit in here. The book "Making it All Work" describes the horizons of focus in vivid detail. I suggest you read it if you haven't already.

I think the second option is the better one. I would update the plan each year and add another year to it.

Regarding naming the thing, naming schemes in general are an intersting topic. I like to use a 'theme' that fits the purpose of the thing to name. I'll give you an example for what I mean.

There is a book about starting a business called "The Art of the Start" or so by G. Kawasaki. The name of the book is such a theme. It is a derivative of the most famous book on warfare, called "The Art of War". It's from a Chinese general called Szun Tun. In his book Kawasaki names a couple of things after items from asian culture, sticking to this "Art of War"-theme. For instance he talks about a business plan called a "Mat" which is somehting from asia I forgot what it was, sorry. Or he uses the asian "mantra" instead of a western word like "motto" and so on. I think it became clear what I mean with "theme".

Now, I said I like to use themes that support the purpose of the thing to name. Kawasaki did the same! At least I would argue that a warfare analogy is a good fit for starting a business and establishing it on the market. It has the same air of "engagement" and "fight".

So, what would be a good theme for a personal 5 years plan?

It depends on your outlook on life for one.

The question kelstarrising asks is an excellent one.

Maybe you could answer her question and after that you could find a "theme" that matches that and then find a set of names according to that theme?

It's up to you I guess. In any case you can see that I am way to geeky to just name something a "plan" and be done with it. :-)

With regard to the question of *naming* the plan, if I just use 2017 in the name, it would not be instantly clear to me whether 2017 is the starting year or the ending year of the 5-year plan.

So, I use electronic file names of the type: "business plan 2012 - 2016"; "business plan 2013 - 2017"; etc. In referring to information for, say, 2014, it would matter whether it was the 2014 data in the 2012-2016 plan or the 2013-2017 plan.

I don't like the idea of N-year plans.

I don't like the idea of N-year plans. I can have a 2-year specific goal or 10-year specific goal but not the general 5-year plan.

What would be the successful outcome of the 5-year plan? Everything achieved? 64.88% achieved?

How can you compare a progress in one area with a progress with other areas?

This approach wouldn't work for me.
