How to process in a metting without being rude?

Today I was in a meeting that was long and boring, and I know I can do a lot of things instead of been there, but I did not have other option or any way to get out of there.

I had my palm and many possibles things to do, but I do not want to be rude.

I know David Allen said that in order to be really productive you can use those moments too...

How to process in a meeting without being rude?

If you use a Palm centric system like I do then this is real easy. People just think that you are taking notes while you are:
- brainstorming or planning other projects
- checking and/or replying and/or writing emails
- catching up on news or other read/review items
- relaxing with a good game

If you have a paper based system I would think that you could still use the time to brainstorm. Your coworkers will think that you are just taking notes on the meeting.

Whatever you do, just make sure to grab a sentence or two every so often just in case you are called upon for something. Otherwise you might get embarrassed.

One of the best solutions is to quickly grab your cell phone, look at the screen, and then politely excuse yourself from the meeting. Everyone will think that your phone was set t vibrate, you got an emergency phone call and just couldn't make it back.
