Incensistency between VISION (40000 ft) and PURPOSE (50000 ft)

Hi guys,

I recently discovered the work of David and found the proposed system quite interesting and aligned with my way of thinking. When looking to implement it more in depth, I was kind of startled by a discovery I made. Indeed, I was trying to put some word on the different areas of focus as define in GTD, and I'm quite stuck: I have quite a clear vision of what are my goals (professionally) in the coming 3 to 5 years: I wanna learn and continue to grow in the field in which I currently work. However, when lookin a level above, on a 50000 ft level, I find some inconsistency : the purpose I wanna serve lies far away from what I currently do, and what I see myself doing in the coming years. So, it's actually kinda hard to deal with, and this inconsistency prevents me from being fully confortable with this system.

I was wondering how you guys felt about that, do you sometimes identify mismatches between the medium-term goals you are pursuing and the "bigger plan" purpose of your life ? Does this hinder you from going forward ?
I'm still a young professionnal, and I enjoy what I do and I know I have much to learn. It bothers me to sometimes feel that maybe all of the work I currently put in will not serve what I see as a purpose for me. What if later is too late to actually make a change?

Thanks a lot for your insights on this topic !

My experience is that the bottom-up approach of GTD works very well, not only as a useful day-to-day practice, but as a way to let my higher priorities be understood more clearly through the choices I make. At the same time, I have found that having intentions for the future makes me aware of opportunities as they arise to move those intentions forward. Sometimes I have become aware of what is happening only after the fact. If you are new to GTD, my advice is to give yourself some time to see how things work for you, and what your real priorities are.

Hi Kommma. Its good to know that this "inconsistency" has been "revealed" to you thanks to GTD. A lot of people, like me, go around for years, only to discover late in life what "alingment" really meant, and that they have wasted a lot of time, not really knowing they were doing so. Specially in the corporate world. So, it seems to me you`ve already won. Dont worry. Relax and enjoy life everyday. Keep it under control with GTD and you will notice how, little by little, your purpose will start revealing itself, therefore enjoying the pleasures of certainty and tranquility only found in true alingnment.

Hello! I agree with jortega- it´s great that you have discovered this! That´s the first step. Don´t be afraid of the thought that you feel far away from where to wish to be. And most of all- Don´t be afraid to capture any idea about how you might to get there, or how this mismatch might force a change of your other horizons- let every idea go through the clarify process, maybe you´ll throw someone away, maybe you´ll park some of them on someday maybe for a while until you have enough time and recourses to move it forward. Just be patient, and accept that not every horizon look perfect. Start on mastering the five steps- capture, clarify, organise, reflect and engage. Good luck!!
