Just getting started... help me onto the right path!

Hi Folks,
Very excited about GTD. Though I'm highly tech savvy, I've decided to start with a mostly paper based system. I assembled a 3 ring binder similar to the one I saw on the back table at my RoadMap seminar.

I use Outlook for my Calendar and am determined to keep that a sacred hard landscape.

So, here's probably an easy question-- and I'd LOVE to hear your thoughts:

I had the following NA under @home:
"Call EP Bikes to discuss options: 401-434-3838"

Basically, I wanted to call this bike store and see if they'd be willing to exchange my bike for a different model... also wanted to schedule a tuneup for my wife's bike.

So, I called the bikeshop and decided to drop my bikes off with them on Thursday (since according to my Calendar, I'll be at an Orthodontic appt right next door on that day).

My question: What do I do at this point? Do I put "Drop Bikes off at EP Cycle" on the calendar even though I don't have a specific time set to do that? Or does this go on the @home list as a new NA?

GTD is an "advanced common sense" so do not lose the standard common sense just for the sake of system purity. Put it on your calendar.
 
I'd put it as All-day Event in my Calendar to make sure I'm reminded of that in the morning to pick up the bikes and drop them off the same day while by the shop.

Not to beat a dead horse to death, but I'd do two things:

1) write "take bikes to shop" on your errands list (since it doesn't *have* to be done on a particular day)

2) add a "safety net" entry in your calendar - information like "going near bike shop today - put in car?"

That way, you're not polluting your calendar, and if you don't do it that day, it's still captured...

I agree it goes on your calendar. I also think that you DO have a specific time set to do that.

Assuming that your Orthodontic appointment is at a specific time, it makes sense that you will either drop off your bikes before or after the appointment - not at just any random time during the day. Looking at your calendar now, does it matter whether you drop them off before or after your Orthodontic appointment? It may matter to you depending on the time of day, other items on your calendar (which give you more or less time to travel and conduct your business at the bike shop) and whether you're comfortable with your bikes being in/on your vehicle while you're at your appointment. You'll want to estimate how long it will take to drop off the bikes. Even if they're expected, there may be paperwork to fill out, another customer in line ahead of you, etc.

I'd also block out travel time on your calendar to show you're unavailable for other things.

So anyway, many words later, I think it goes on your calendar because that's where it belongs, within the system.
