I need to get a labeler for someone who has Parkinson's. Due to shaky hand, removing the backing is very difficult if it is a solid piece, as it is in the Brother labeler I own. Does anyone know of one that has either a scored backing or where the edge of the backing exceeds the label enough that it can be grabbed (even with a tweezer)?

Melamine board for dry erase?
I have read that is now popular to use a melamine board for dry erase. Does anyone have an actual experience with this? Is there much shadowing due to the pigment adhering? Is the slight roughness of the surface a problem in anyway?

Dymo Letra Tag
Dymo makes one called Letra Tag. The backing is scored down the middle. it's very easy to peel off the backing by bending the label slightly and the backing edges pop up. Wal-Mart carries them.

My Brother label maker also users tape that is scored down the center of the backing. Just squeeze the tape together and the backing opens up for easy removal.
Also any of the printers that attach to a PC (i.e. Dymo) typically have backing that is longer than the label.
On the Melamine board question you can get ghosting. It tends to be a function of the color used plus the length of time the writing stays on the board. Red & Green in my experience are the worst. Black is the best.
Giving the board a regular clean with a white board cleaner goes a long way to eliminating the ghosting issue. Though given how cheap the board is, you could always replace it if the ghosting got real bad.

I use a Dymo labelwriter 400. It plugs into my PC and I can print various size lables with it. The ones I have range from 24mm x 12mm like little price lables to 190mm x 59mm for printing large ring binder spine lables. They all have an amount of backing paper around the label and so they are quite easy to peel, much easier than the handheld labellers. Also it is more comfortable to type them using the PC than the little buttons. (I have RSI).
