Making It All Work - New Book Release Date?

Hi All,

I'm looking forward to David Allen's new book and thought I'd order myself a copy as a late Christmas present to myself, as I belived it wasn't available until Dec 30th.

However, when I ordered it through Amazon.co.uk they're saying it'll be available on the 17th Dec as the order confirmation email mentions below:

-----------------------------------------------------
Dispatch estimate for these items:
17 Dec 2008
Delivery estimate:
18 Dec 2008 - 19 Dec 2008
"Making it All Work: Winning at the Game of Work and the Business of Life" David Allen; Hardcover; £8.44 Sold by: Amazon EU S.a.r.L.
-----------------------------------------------------

Is this simply an error with Amazon or will they have the book available earlier?

Any info most appreciated!

Seasons Greetings,

Andy.

I checked a professional bookdealer database and the publication date is 12/18/08 in the UK.

Personally I don't understand the U.S. December 30, 2008 publication date. This just misses the Christmas rush, unless you give a pre-order promise. If the release date is for all those who are making life changes at the start of the year, a release date of a few weeks earlier wouldn't make a difference. Not only that, most GTDers are pretty actively working on themselves, that they don't really need New Year resolutions. My only guess is that they think that the New Year's resolution market is bigger.

I agree, it's probably irrational marketing nonsense. Given the tough economic times, I think it is silly to delay publication. It is a merry thought, though, to think of all those people who are "making a New Year's resolution to get organized" buying a David Allen book- they may not get the message they were expecting.

My opinion is that few people would give this book as a Christmas gift to another person. I believe the more likely purchasing scenario is that many people who want to improve themselves would buy this book using a gift card / certificate they received at Christmas for a major bookseller or Amazon.com. It's not like this book is an iPhone ;)

The gift card aspect is interesting, but if that is the case, why not put it on sale December 26th or 27th to pick up shoppers? Plus, there have been warnings from consumer finance experts to not use gift cards this season, due to business viability concerns. Gift cards are just unsecured debt. Borders was touted as a possible acquisition target for Barnes and Noble earlier this year, and it is utterly possible for a major bookseller to fold. I would urge anyone to redeem any gift cards promptly this season.

The 30th it is then!

Hi All,

I've just had an email from Amazon UK regarding my order, saying the order has been delayed and expected despatch date is now the 30th Dec 08.

Looks like it'll be a new year read rather than over the Christmas break!

Seasons Greetings,

Andy.

Might be a Christmas read after all!

Will be here any day now

I received word from Amazon on Sunday (12-28-08) that the book was being shipped to me (I'm DC area) I'm very curious and look forward to it.

Hi all,

My copy ended up arriving, as Amazon UK said, on Christmas Eve.

Not had chance to properly get into it yet, but what I have read so far is great.

It's a good combination of practical advice along the lines of the first "Getting Things Done" book, mixed with advice on the methodology and theories of how/why GTD works, along the lines of the second book "Ready for Anything".

Overall, so far so good.

Have a Happy 2009.

Cheers,

Andy.
