Mind Sweep

I want to ask about mind sweep. I've made it the first time I started with GTD. Now, I want to get better in project horizons to know to make better decisions, so I've bought Making it all work. And I'm in the fourth chapter, and it's talking about mind sweep. My question is, when is it neccesary to make mind sweep again? Sitting and writting one thought in one paper for severals hours isn't something of every day, I guess. so I want to know when it must be done. Now I write everytime something appear in my head. When do you make a mind sweep?

The trite answer is whenever you think you need to.

The answer for me is I try to capture stuff all the time but then again in weekly review I try to spend at least a few minutes near the beginning just thinking about anything I may have missed adding to my inbox and when I get to the get creative part it's often a whirlwind of new ideas that then go into in for processing later, a mini-mind sweep if you will.

yes that's a healthy habit. I am from Argentina, where are you from? I actually do the mind sweep in weekly reviews, but I directly put it in my lists, or in digital form for later proccesing. But I don't write it in one paper every thought, what do you think?

Ideally ONCE. At the beginning. After you've swept ALL the thoughts from your mind you have to write down every new thought. In this way your mind will never get cluttered again.

Practically you should do mind sweep if you feel worried that maybe you've forgot about something.

I'm in the US. I do tend to put one thought per paper but my paper is small, either a small 3 x 5 note or 1/4 of a standard letter page from scrap paper I cut and make into pads or a notetaker wallet piece of paper. It's a lot easier to process the thoughts later when there is only one per piece of paper. I've found if I do the mind sweep in my weekly review and try to also process those results in the same weekly review that I can get into a huge loop of thought, process, create next action ooo more thoughts etc. When I do that the WR takes much longer. That's why I put the WR mind clearing thoughts into the inbox for processing at my next regular processing time, which should be later that day.

I do a mind sweep as part of my weekly review. Since I tend to enter thoughts into my inbox as needed (written on note cards or entered into Evernote), the mind sweep only takes a few minutes.

If I do have thoughts swirling around in my mind or I am starting a new project, I also tend to do a mind sweep as needed.

PS: I was lucky enough to visit Mendoza and Rosario a couple of years ago when we were hoping to partner with an Argentinian company. We're still hopeful that we'll be able to explore the partnership again.

So nice, there good places to visit and good people to know here also. Thanks for your replies. It's just that I starting using digitally GTD in google apps and take some notes in my cellphone. But, anyway I think I'm more confortable doing mind sweep low-teech, anyway having in my email the lists is better than in paper-based. I could try doing mind sweep in an entire word document for example, but for now I think I would use standards. thanks

Dump whatever is on your mind, even the gnarly thoughts. I collect ideas on note pads, place mats, emails, sketch books, [sometimes even emailing myself] then dumping those into my in box and reviewing weekly.
