mindsweep frequency

newbie here - very first post. hi everyone.

what's the frequency supposed to be like for mindsweeps. after the initial one at the very beginning, is there some sort of schedule for more mindsweeps of the same or lesser depth?

As needed

I have a weekly sweep (see my GTD setup from the links in my signature) but I do not perform it consistently, because sometimes I am on top of my master list enough to know what all my short-term goals are. I accomplish that with the help of my morning review (also outlined in my setup). So for me, I'll do a sweep weekly if I have had a hectic week where my list might have gotten away from me.

I write things down whenever I think of them, so I don't feel a need for a separate
mind sweep. In effect, I do mindsweeps constantly.
 
Along with during the weekly review, i like to do a mindsweep whenever I'm feeling especially stressed. While the majority of things i end up writing down are already on my lists, i'm always surprised by how often i'll end up including a task or two that i've been thinking (or worrying) about but haven't previously managed to capture. I've always found it 15 or 20 minutes very well spent.
 
Mindsweep Frequency

Although I work at capture constantly, I find doing an in depth mindsweep (outside of a weekly review) very helpful every few weeks. I am always astounded by how much I come up with! I try to use a variety of inspirations (David's mindsweep webinar is great and relatively short).

Ss far, some people are telling me they never do mindsweeps beyond the very first initial one, some are saying it's to be done weekly at the WR, and some say every few weeks or as necessary, outside the WR. I guess this is one of those things that it's going to depend on the person's comfort level - a person should do mindsweeps at whatever frequency will make them comfortable that they are getting everything down into their system. I also capture things many times a day. So I think I may only need mindsweeps every few months, and then only really to make sure the higher altitudes are covered. Sound right?

That sounds like a good resume to me... different people, different GTD-setups!

I think it also might depend on what you consider a mind sweep. Do you only consider a full blown mind sweep with all sorts of inspirational check lists to be a mind sweep. Or would you call the thought "mm, let's think for a minute, is there something I need to capture that I haven't written down before" during the weekly review also a mind sweep? Depending on your answer to that question, you will say that you do mind sweeps every week or only now and then...

Mind sweeps should be done whenever you feel as though you have things on your mind that you haven't captured. They're based on a standard, not a schedule. If you're rigorous about doing a thorough mind sweep at each weekly review, you might be able to get away with just-in-time capturing during the week; but for me, some issues come up that are too subtle for me to notice them the first time, and they'll linger until I consciously focus on them--at which point I capture them.

There are usually a few open loops like this that I need to grab, so usually every 48-72 hours, I'll accrue enough mental overhead to realize that it's time to do another mind sweep. But it's the level of internal distraction that queues the action, not the time interval.
