Mini notebook

In answer to my question about taking book notes, someone suggested having a notebook with me when I'm reading a book. So I went out and bought a couple of the mini Mead "memo" books. It is 5x3, holds 60 sheets and fits in my shirt pocket.

One side benefit that I've found is that since it is so small, I now always have one with me in my shirt pocket. One of my goals for a long time is that I have wanted to keep a diary, but I've always failed to do it. The reason is that I wanted to keep it on the computer, because my handwriting is so bad. The thing is, whenever I was at my computer, I'd rarely write in my diary, for whatever reason. But now I've found that with this mini notebook that I can write in it when I'm on the subway or in the bathroom. So far I've been writing in my diary every day now. When I get home, I tear out the diary pages from the notebook and put it in my inbox. When I get some time, I type the entries into my computer.

I remember one of the things in the GTD book is that there are a lot of 5 or 10 minute windows in the day. But until I got this mini notebook, I didn't always have something to do because I was away from my desk and supplies. Now I can write in my diary, or sketch out an email. It's pretty amazing.

Every jacket pocket

I too have discovered the wonders of those little notebooks. Living near San Francisco, you never go out without a jacket, so I've put a notebook and pen in each of my jacket's pockets (summer jacket, winter jacket, windy jacket). Anytime a thought strikes, I just jot it down. I've gotten pretty good at walking and writing at the same time...

I always wanted to try this but pens have a bad habit of breaking. You can keep a notebook in your pants pocket but I could never figure out where to keep a pen when I wasn't wearing a shirt with a pocket. I think its the major reason I started carrying a PDA and went electronic.

Check out those little "Fisher Space Pens"---they are great pens, small, reliable, and easily fit in your pants or shorts pockets. You can get them at Office Depot or on-line from the manufacturer. I never leave home without it :)

I think the pen in my pants is already small enough (rim shot).

Having said that, I did a Google search and I'll check it out. Of the more facinating options was the neckchain pen and the telescoping pen, though I'll probably go with the "bullet" pen since it seems to be the smallest and most indestructible.

The Rotring pen that DA included in their "evening module" notepad wallet telescopes open. When in the closed position, it's very small and would easily fit in a pocket. I'm not sure if it's available separately however.

Yes, I saw that. Does anyone use it? I'd probably want to keep it in my back pocket most of the time and I'm not sure it would hold up. I'm surprised at how small it is, though.

The telescoping Rotring is available separately: specialty pen stores have it.

The body is machined aluminum, so it's very unlikely to break in your pocket. Rip a hole in your clothing, maybe, but it won't break under any stress that you personally are able to survive.

The downside, and the reason why I didn't buy one, is that it takes a non-standard miniature ballpoint refill. Not readily available, and you can't use alternatives like gel ink.

Been using the 3x5 Mead memo books for years. I tried going to index cards and even backs of business cards since the edges of the notebook pages had a tendency to get a bit worn on me. Still came back to the notebook. I wish I could get them in all black instead of all the colors for a bit more of a professional look.

As far as pens go, I've been using the Cross ION gel pens for a couple of years. Even comes with a snap for your key ring. Very small.

Notebook and pen are in my pocket at all times as my primary capture device.
