One Big Mess--Treo, iSync, Palm--lost data, me-wreck

It's me again--Miss Switcheroo--well I settled on using for my planning purposes my Treo which I then linked up to my Mac's iCal (fine program) but had to go to Mark-Space (as per I was advised on this forum) to buy $39.95 iSync program so the two would link--took all night to do this but I did it, and things went fine for two weeks and then I noticed I was losing things, dates, certain task lists would not open. Bad. Went to Treo site and saw that I needed to upgrade my Treo OS. Sounds reasonable no matter what. Started down that path, rebooting along as I was told and doing what they said until I got to this:!!!!

Download: TREO650_1_05A_VZW_mac.zip (8.3 MB zip)
Your Mac's web browser should automatically expand the file into a folder named "PALM."
Note: If the browser does not expand the file automatically, use an expansion utility.

I DO NOT HAVE ONE OF THESE THAT I KNOW OF.....

Drag and drop the decompressed PALM folder to the expansion card icon on your Mac's desktop.

YEAH, RIGHT. GET RIGHT ON THAT...

It is important that you drop this folder at the root of the expansion card (drag it to the icon; don't open the expansion card).

HEAVEN'S TO BETSY, NO!!! I WOULDN'T DARE..

Do not move it to a subfolder on the expansion card.

NO WAY JOSE.

Drag the expansion card icon to the Eject icon on the Mac's dock to un-mount it from your Mac.
Insert the expansion card into your Treo smartphone.

INSERT WHAT EXPANSION CARD??? DO I PRINT ONE OUT OR WHAT?? JOKE.

The updater will auto-start when you insert the card. Follow the onscreen instructions to begin the update.
Your device will reset itself several times before the update is complete.
When you see the screen that asks you to tap targets (below), remove the expansion card from your smartphone. Then follow the onscreen instructions to calibrate the touchscreen and set date and time.

I DO KNOW HOW TO CALIBRATE!!
I AM SO FRUSTRATED, I AM READY TO GO BACK TO PAPER. ACTUALLY THIS IS HEARTBREAKING. I DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT TO DO. SO FAR I CAN SYNC WITH MY ICAL BUT LOSE APPTS HERE AND THERE AND MY ENTIRE ADDRESS LIST HAS BEEN ERASED ON MY TREO. DOES ANY TECHIE OUT THERE KNOW WHAT TO DO?? I HAVE TREO650, POWERBOOK G4, AND LIKE ICAL.

THANKS A BUNCH IF YOU MADE IT THIS FAR.

Trish:

I can't help you with this one but I'm feeling for you right now. I referred you to Missing Sync and I have had no big problems with it, especially since the V. 3.0 upgrade.

upgrade?

Another idea: What is your address? I am going to overnight my Mac, Treo, and passwords to you so you can fix it and FedEx to whole thing back by tomorrow...are you in the U.S.?? (I hope)

Don't install the update!

First off, don't install the update. It wipes the data on the Treo and you will then have to restore it from the Mac. If the data is good on your Mac then this will be fine, but it doesn't sound like you know that yet.

Next, since your address book is gone from the Treo, you might as well force an update from the Mac so that the Mac address book shows up in the Treo. To make sure this is OK to do, check your Treo address book one more time. If it is empty or contains only addresses that are also on the Mac, then you can go ahead and force the update. I know you said the address book on the Treo is empty, but I want to make sure.

Before tackling the Address Book, it wouldn't hurt to back it up on the Mac. Open the Address Book program and select File->Backup Address Book.

To force Missing Sync to send load the Mac address book onto the Treo:
1. Open Missing Sync on the Mac.
2. Select the Conduits tab.
3. Double-click on Mark/Space Contacts.
4. The Mark/Space Contacts Conduit Settings window will pop up. Select "Overwrite handheld with desktop data"
5. Make sure "All" is selected for "Synchronize contact groups.
6. Hit OK to close the Mark/Space Contacts Conduit Settings window
7. Uncheck all of the Conduits but the mark/Space Contacts one. This way only the Contacts will be synched next time you do a hotsync, saving you time.
8. Connect the Treo to the Mac and do a hotsync.
9. Check your address book on the Treo to see if it is properly populated. If it isn't, you will probably have some sort of dialog box on your Missing Sync window on the Mac explaining what went wrong. If not, click on "Sync History" at the top of the MS window and see what it says.
10. Make sure the Next Sync Action for Mark/Space Contacts is set to synchronize. If it isn't then double click on the line and set it to synchronize.
11. Do one more hotsync just to make sure things are working.

Next is ical. If events are missing from the Treo but not the Mac, do the same procedure just described but with the Mark/Space Events conduit. Meaning, back up the iCal database, turn on just the Events conduit, set it to have the Mac overwrite the Treo, then do the hotsyncs.

If data is missing from the Mac but not the Treo, try doing a hotsync with the Mark/Space event conduit set to synchronize. If the data doesn't go up to the Mac then check the Sync History at the top of the MS window to look for problems. If you get stuck you may need to enter the missing events into the Mac by hand then force an Events hotsync down to the Treo.

Once those two are fixed then select the All Conduits profile in the pull-down in the upper right section of the Missing Sync window to put things back to normal.

FWIW, getting Missing Sync was the right thing to do. I'm not sure what is going on but it has worked well for me and is much faster than the Palm desktop.

One more thing. You can also submit questions to Missing Sync tech support. They are usually pretty good at resolving problems.

I'll have a shot at helping you.

1 Back up your ical and address book (ie file > back up database (ical) and back up address book (address book). These two files can be stored in any convient location ... their your insurance policy!

2 Download the latest Treo (Mac version), which you appear to have done. Unpack it ... the file should automatically unzip/unpack itself leaving a folder (name I get is Treo650 VZW Updater 1.05a). If that does not happen then you will have a ZIP file located in your down load location (desktop?). If that is the case go to Version Tracker and download a unzipper program (Untar-1.3.1 (free) gets a good write up). Once you have the unzipper installed, unzip the palm file.

3 Launch Mark Sync (a.k.a as the Missing Sync for Palm).

4. Click on the "install" tab, it will bring up the install window ... 2 panels. Top one for installing files directly to the internal memory. Lower one for installing to the SD Card.

5. Locate the Palm folder and drag it into the lower window (ie SD card). You will get a message asking if you want to install multiple files (some 37 in total).. select install.

6. Switch back to the "conduits" window by selecting the conduits tab. This is an option step but one well worth tacking giving the updating you are about to do. With the exception of the install conduit change all the other to "do nothing" (next sync action). The only thing you want to happen is that the files get installed!

7. Sync your Treo to the Mac. MAKE shore you have a SD card in the SD slot!!!

8. Once the sync is completed disconnect your Treo from the Mac and it should start to update.

9. Once all is done you can sync your updated Treo to your Mac. Just remember to change the conduit setting back. On this 1st sync you may wish to set the sync setting to desktop overwrites handheld.

Lots of steps but I have confidence that you can do it.

First back up, then back up again

I can't help with your specific problems with Treo/Mac/ical, BUT I do have one little piece of heartfelt advice. Assuming you have SOME data files, maybe missing a few events but at least it's your data, BACK UP the data and then BACK UP YOUR BACKUP before you do ANY major changes (like OS upgrades, adding software, etc.) to your Treo. With multiple backups of data, preferably on different storage media or drives, you can play away without losing everything.

From the Palm web page, here is why I discouraged installing the Palm update:

"Caution: This update will erase all data on your smartphone and revert it to a factory state. Follow the directions to ensure data normally backed up during a HotSync operation is saved. After the update is complete, data will be restored from these backups."

To all,

Backing up your data (both PC and Treo) is a must do before any systems upgrade. It should also be part of a regular maintenance program for these devises.

For the Treo/Palm I use blue nomad's "BackupBuddy VFS". A nice straight forward piece of software.

As to the particular Treo update, while I agree that an update that wipes out your existing data is not good, we need to understand what benefits/patches it supplies. If those benefits/patches are significant then the price for the upgrade is the lost of the Treo's data.

Which brings us back to the first preposition back up your data.

This is a good idea. I also use BackupBuddy VFS and am happy with it.

It's not a bad idea once Trish figures out where her data is and if she needs to try to salvage anything from the Treo before wiping it out. It just shouldn't be the first thing she does.

ReBuild,
I am trying your approach first.

Here is where I am:

I DID IT!! With lots of help from you all....

Thank you, thank you!! Especially to ReBuild and to beirne. I finally got my system up and running again. Thank you so much for taking the TIME to write out all those careful, step by step instructions. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.

Bonne Nuit,
Trish

Trish

Glad to be able to help you.

Must say when I sore the point at which you had stopped (with all those *.prc* files I was concerned! Though you got through that and successfully completed the update. As an aside, and for others, the Palm folder contained some 37 files all labeled XXXX.prc ... these are the files that update the palm os system. So just do as the instruction state ... drag the palm folder to the install window (SD) and go from there. Do not focus on what is in the folder!!!

But first of all ... BACK UP YOUR DATA PC AND PALM/TREO. It's the only insurance you have
