Recommendations on Types of File Folders?

In GTD, David Allen recommends letter rather than legal size file folders.

However, what do people recommend regarding the folder tabs and why?

Some folders have the precut tabs for labelling, either 3 or five in a series. Some don't have a precut tab but just have a "lip" at the top that extends the entire back of the folder up about a half inch for labeling.

I've always struggled with this, because if you use the precut labels, what system is best? A - L on the right tabs, M - Z on the Middle Tabs, etc? Problem is when you add files, whatever organization system you use gets mixed up....

File Folders

I use 1/3 cut folders. Buy the good ones with the reinforced top. I have a Dymo 330 LabelWriter (there are other models) for all my labels because I want them all neat and to look the same. It's an investment, but worth it.

I don't worry about getting them "all mixed up" -- I just label the folder so that I logically look in it to find whatever I've put there. You shouldn't have to think about it. Just file it, and find it.
 
I use 1/3 cut files. There have been other discussions on these boards about using straight-line filing (where all the tabs line up) or different methods of staggering the tabs. I have found that it's not worth my time to consider how the tabs line up. As long as the item is clearly labeled and my files are not crammed together, I can file quickly and not worry about finding things.
 
I use the straight cut folders. They offer greater flexibility in the length of title for label posted to the folder. Don't have to worry about cuting the label fit the 1/3 or 1/5 tab.
