Return from Vacation Problems

I know we recently just touched upon getting back on top of things after a vacation. I thought spending a certain amount of time for each day gone was a great idea. And, I still do. However, I have been swamped with immediate (I promise you they are immediate) actions. I have not had the time to even get back into GTD. I know there will be light at the end of tunnel - maybe within 2 weeks. My inbox is just glaring at me and I haven't even properly looked at my next action lists. I didn't do any work or GTD while I was on vacation, since I promised myself. Maybe this is overwhelm.

Does anyone have any additional tips?

I hate it when that happens

Do an emergency scan of your inbox....looking for things that MUST be dealt with. Put the rest out of your sight, but park a reminder someplace for yourself to go back to it.

Do an emergency scan of your next actions lists, just looking for something critical.

Try your level best to schedule some time every day to get to the backlog. Not to do it, but to processes it.

Do a quickie weekly review ASAP! And, for me, I'd have to do a brain dump too to make sure all that is coming at you now is captured.

Hopefully, Kelly from DavidCo will chime in here. She travels a lot and must deal with this often. I'm interested in hearing tips too as I'll be facing this myself in about a month. Good luck!

Based on my personal experience (I travel around 130k miles per year) my recommendation will stop and figure it out what you need to get out of the hole.

You need to take time to clean your inbox, a good rule of thumb is 1 hour per day out.

I understand probably you think you do not have the time, because you have many "Immediate"; in my personal experience that it the time that you push the brake and STOP.

When your lists and therefore your system is incomplete, everything looks to have more priority than really had in the big scheme of things.

My advice will be STOP, how long do you need to clean up, schedule ASAP, a soon as you have again a complete system and everything collected you will be able to make better decisions. Yes that sounds impossible in the middle of the storm of important things that need to be done and look immediate, but unless you can see the forest, you will not be able to distinguish the different kind of trees.

Again, Stop, Collect, Process and move any no urgent to Someday/Maybe.

After that you will see that a lot different the issues on hand, and the reality is no one will noticed, in the other way, people will more likely get a better and faster response to their issues.

Best,

Thank you, Barb and Apinaud! I truly needed to be reminded to stop and follow the emergency steps (and then regular steps) to get my GTD system back up-to-date. This whole post-vacation situation shows me just how important my whole set-up is to me. Once I started to get control back, I moved so much quicker. Without it I found myself just sitting there mulling over random actions. I couldn't really concentrate with focus. It was good to be reminded of why I started this whole process to begin with.

Great success!

Wonderful to hear you're back on track. Gives me courage to handle what comes at me after my long trip.
