Setting New Standards

I recently posted the below question to the Ready4Anything group but I thought that I might get a little more response here:

I've been re-listening to my GTD Fast CDs for the last
week and Sunday morning on my way to church I heard
Disk 5 Track 4 and I just listened to it over and
over.

In that particular track David talks about our
addiction to stress (the disorder drug in Raedy for
Anything chapter 30) and says that when many people
start getting control of things in their life they
will subconsciously begin to let things slip to get
back to the level of stress that they are comfortable
with. I agree with that. He goes on to say that we can
set a new standard and stress level and that we can
become addicted to that, in a much healthier way.
(This is still all chapter 30 stuff here.) I agree
with this and I see it in my own life. I now can't
stand for something to sit in my inbox more than a day
and I must do a weekly review every week.

He goes on to say that this is what his "Leveraging
Focus & Vision" seminar is all about - learning how to
speed up the process of setting new standards. (Man, I
want to attend one of those seminars but they never
seem to be held near me.) He very quickly mentions
getting a vision and focusing on it and then says, "I
highly reccommend that you create a personal
affirmation for yourself that you look at at least
once a day."

I need more information about this "daily
affirmation". Since this ties in so well with chapter
30 this seems like the time and place to ask. So, does
anyone else here use a "daily affirmation"? What is
it? How do you use it? How do you use it to set new
standards for yourself? I would really like some help
in this "reprogramming" area.

Ricky, the affirmation I use are the list of my values with a clarifying statement attached to each. I did this exercise through a Covey course and it is on my PDA for referral when I am facing a decision or just thinking about things. These are distinct from my goals. The clarifying statement is merely my definition of what the value means to me.

I love the part of the CDs that you mention! I am still working on my vision.

I have a 3 x 5 card word template that I includes a small calendar of this month and next, and spaces to capture short notes if I don't have my handheld or tabletpc:

- Weekly Planning:
- Future Schedule:
- Contacts:
- To Do List Items:
- Notes & References:

And then on the back I list (which I try to review daily):

Dream, Plan, Organize, Act, Evaluate
- Values:
- Personal Mission:
- Roles:
- Long Range Goals:
- Work Harder At
- Do More Of
- Prayers:
- Inspiration:

I guess this is my application of Covey (I did this in the Plan Plus software add-on for Outlook) and then refererence it on my card.
