Smartphone recommendations?

My plan Tungsten has finally given up the ghost, and I've decided I'd like to get a smartphone so that I need only carry one device with me instead of a PDA and a mobile.

I'm just looking at what's out there, and wondered if anyone could recommend a good looking phone that synchs with outlook (including categories for tasks and contacts (I use a lot of these!)) which is available in the UK? Ideally I'd like a smartphone which looks more like a mobile than a big clunky pda, if that makes sense?

I can highly recommend the HTC DASH (code name is S620) - you can see the details at www.htc.com

I've been using one for about 2 years - it runs windows mobile and syncs nicely. It is wider than most mobiles, but is very thin.

I'm in the U.S., so models may differ from what is available to you. But, I recently bought a Motorola Q and am happy with my choice. I do sync it with Outlook regularly.

Here is some general advice:
Spend a lot of time thinking about what type of keypad you really want. Go to the stores and try out the different models. A lot people like the iPhone, but I prefer a physical keypad. I also wanted a full keypad, instead of what the Blackberry Pearl uses, which is two letters per keypad.

What other features do you want in a phone? The blackberries that had a full keypad did come with a camera, which was a problem for me.

What operating system do you want. Windows Mobile works great with Outlook, but I have read that the operating system slows with time. (I can't comment on this.) Blackberry is its own operating system and has pros and cons. Apple is going to open the iphone to third-party software developers, but right now, the choices in applications is limited. Nokia has its own operating system and I don't know enough to comment.

I would also spend time reading the reviews on CNET.com. It's good place for reading user reviews. You can see radiation levels for various phones.

Leo Laporte the "Tech Guy" (of radio and television) and the guests on his radio program this weekend were raving about the new Blackberry 9000, which will be available this summer. They seem to have access to all the new gadgets and hence better opportunities than most to compare them. Laporte has had an iPhone since they first came out (I don't know if he's still on the original one) but seems to prefer the Blackberry to the iPhone and claims the Blackberry is superior to Windows Mobile devices. It might be worth your time to check out the podcasts of his radio program.
