I set up a GTD system for the first time last year using the Palm Desktop application, and have managed to get a pretty good working system going. The only problem is that I just don't use my handheld any more. I've had the handheld since 2003 (it's a Palm Tungsten E) - it still works okay, but it's just one more thing to remember to carry around with me, and honestly, I'm not doing it. (I charged it today for the first time in about six months, I think.)
Meanwhile, I've been using the same, very basic phone for the last 5 years (Nokia 1100 - really, really basic).
I'm now almost resolved to switch to a smartphone, so that I only have one device to carry around.
My problem is that I don't want to lose any of the functionality of either. I really like the Palm desktop software, and would like to be able to keep using it (I sit at my computer a lot, so a lot of my capturing etc goes straight in to the program there) but at the same time, my very basic phone has been so reliable over the years, and I don't want to compromise on the quality of those basic features (battery life, ease of making calls etc).
From what I've read (here and elsewhere) the best smartphone as a phone is the Nokia E71 - it fits nicely into my price range as well. But the lack of task list seems like a major problem.
In addition, I haven't been able to find a way that would let me keep regularly using the Palm desktop software while syncing to anything other than a Palm smartphone. (In fact, I can't really find any way of transferring my data out of Palm into Outlook. I have an older version which apparently wasn't installed with the translators for importing files.)
Has anyone else sucessfully made a switch from a Palm handheld to a different OS entirely? Any tips on making the change?
