Telecoaching now on my S/M List

I was just looking around this site some more and stumbled on the description of telecoaching. This is something I've thought of before and may consider someday. Then it it me - this should be on my someday/maybe list! So now it is.

Has anyone here tried telecoaching and did you find it enlightening and worthwhile? Did it add another dimension to reading the books?

I did it

I did telecoaching with Meg Edwards. In just one session, I can tell you I felt I advanced my GTD practice way beyond my wildest expectations. I've been using GTD for many years, I'm a Connect member, I've read all the books, and have most of the audio products so I'm not new to GTD. And yet it was time and money very well spent.

The coaches gear the sessions to YOUR needs...YOUR system...nothing else really does that. I learned tips, tricks...you name it.

Highly recommend!

I am getting very close to moving this off my someday/maybe to an actual project. Ironically, one of the things that has held me back from really moving forward with this in the past has been the feeling that my system should be/look better than it is before I show someone from DavidCo :)

the recent mastery webinar and the weekly review CDs has shown me that there are a lot of subtulties that I could get from personalized coaching.

The coaches are COACHES...not the GTD Police!

GTD Prison

Maybe Kelly will create a Forum topic called "GTD Prison". When she sees an extreme violation, she'll move the post to that thread. :p

She has such a great sense of humor...my guess is she'll get a big kick out of our comments. I love Fridays!

All GTD violations are noted on your permanent record. The same one that you were threatened with by teachers growing up. It carries with you through your adult years.

Like what?
- Every email you open, close and mark unread
- Every time you do paper Inbox roulette looking for an easier thing to handle
- Every time you create a next action without a verb

This is serious stuff folks. Be afraid...be very afraid.

Cleaning for the maid

Have you heard that expression, cleaning for the maid? It's about cleaning the house before the person you've hired to clean shows up. I've done that before coaching and telecoaching sessions. I've also tried the opposite, where I let all my dirty laundry hang out unverbed on ambiguous lists. Yes, I've tried both. It's far better to let it all hang out and let the coach do her/his work with me on my real situation, not my fantasy of what I should be. I encourage anyone who is considering coaching or telecoaching to go for it before you clean up your house. Believe me, the coaches have seen messier houses.

Thanks for the responses

I do appreciate the comments, thanks. I'm on mat leave now but will take a look at telecoaching when I'm back at work in the fall. So far, I've been handling the home front projects and NAs ok but when I add work to this mix, I think I could use some help!

Not only have I HEARD that phrase, I live it! I spent several hours yesterday cleaning, etc. because our cleaning person was scheduled to come this morning! (Things would be much better at my house if my wife and teenage son were into GTD, but . . .)

Agree with Barb - worth every penny. Do it when it is right for you not when your system is presentable.

Have trouble with just one thing..

I have a bit of trouble even using the word "maid" in conjunction with the coaching experience. They don't come in and clean up your mess. They figure out where you are (from talking to you as much as looking at your "stuff") and move you forward.

When you work for Davidco, they might just clean up the mess. But the "pay for it" experience is quite a bit different.

Just my opinion

I'd be tempted to do the telecoaching while on mat leave, when you're more relaxed. That is NOT to say that you aren't completely overwhelmed now, but I think it might be far worse when you get back to work! If you can swing it...just one session even...you might find going back to work a much easier transition if some coaching had prepared you for it. In fact, I'd tell the coach your exact situation and focus on the transition itself.

Regardless of what you decide, I'd be interested in your continued posts about your progress! Congrats on the new baby!
