Tickler file and paper organiser

If I have a tickler file with a form in it to be used on 12 Jan I put that in the appropriate tickler file.

When I get to 12 Jan, where do I put that form in my paper organiser? In the reference misc section? In the calendar section? In a new section?

I'm a bit stumped on this one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Don't worry about it until January 12. There's a good chance you'll be more comfortable with your system then.

It sounds like the form becomes actionable after January 12, in which case it goes with other action support materials. You may want to keep such materials in your organizer, but they could also go in a file on or next to your desk, be stuck to a corkboard, or anywhere else where you can find them when needed.

So is this section in my binder with my action lists? or my reference/misc section? or another section?

I don't keep such things in my binder at all, because if I did the bulk would cause my binder to explode. If you want to, I would suggest either with your action lists or in an "action support" section.

It depends on the form. if it is something you need to have filled out on January 12 - then I'd put it in the tickler a few days prior. Then when it comes out, it goes in your inbox. When you process that (daily) it would go on your NA list - and the paper itself would go wherever that stuff goes in your system. For me, it would go in Action Support (in my house, on top of my file cabinet) - and when it came time to deal with it, I'd know it was there...

That's great.

I will put action support 'stuff' into an action support section in my paper organiser.

I know there is a project support section in my binder, but for a one off action then it seems like there needed to be another section. Thanks for the help.

Where do you keep them then? How do you carry those things around with you that day? (A letter, a form, a book to return etc)

Keep in mind that I work for myself, from home, so the amount of time I spend carrying stuff around is pretty limited. But generally I pick whatever size container -- pocket, car door pocket, file folder, briefcase, car trunk... -- matches whatever I'm trying to carry.

Which I assume is what most people do. It's just that for me the default minimum container size is *zero.* If I don't need to carry my full system around, I don't.

When the form appears, it should kick off action. So you'd enter the action in your system. Re: where to put the form, there are two choices: 1) If it's part of a project, I suggest making a folder for it, and putting the form there (even if it's alone). Or 2) if it's a "one-off" action, I put it in an "Action Support" folder (some people use a *labeled* shelf in their stacking shelves - I like the 2nd from the top). If you're new to this folder, you can code actions (e.g., "AS") to remind you where it goes.

Finally, when you've completed the action, toss the form, or file accordingly.

Hope this helps.
