I have a letter sized filing system, and also a few larger legal-sized files (mostly related to mortgage closings). They are too bulky to fold, so I decided to use some legal sized folders, stack them alphabetically and lay them on a shelf in a cabinet in my office. I then created a separate letter sized folder for each item and put a single pice of paper in each that says "see the legal sized folders in cabinet." The small folders go into my primary filing system in case I (or someone else) starts looking for the documents there.
My apologies if this is already common practice. It just seemed like an elegant way to handle the problem.
