How many emails do you get and send in a day?

I was reading Julie Morgenstern's "Never send email in the morning" yesterday, and she defines a "typical" email user as one who receives about 25 messages per day, and who sends 5.

Out of curiosity I looked at my emails for April so far and found that on an average weekday, I receive:

59 system alerts (I'm a security administrator, so these are network and antivirus alerts - most are just FYIs)
67 emails addressed to me personally
4 organization emails (related to community events, company announcements, etc)
40 RSS feeds or discussion group emails related to my field

And I send an average of 30 emails every day.
So I receive on average 170 emails and send 30.

Amazingly, I feel like I use email now much less than I did when I was a customer service rep. I calculated my email once when I was in that position and found on an average weekday I received about 300 personally-addressed emails and sent about 100 (!!) AND my phone was logged in to take calls all day. That was when I discovered - and desperately needed - GTD!! LOL!

What does your email usage look like?

every one is going to hate me when I say this, but I send about 50 and receive about 70 emails per week including meeting requests, FYI info & silly round robins. I love my job :)

Now with a lot of my stuff moving to forums a typical day is

received 100 or so sent 25-30

When I was getting more of my on-line interaction from e-mail lists rather than forums my numbers were typically received 400 or so sent maybe 75-100.

The problem here lies in defining what's "real" email. Should I count spam, which I never even see? Should I count the local Freecycle mailing list, which I only look at every month or two? Should I count RSS entries? Should I include work and home emails?

At home, I only look at about 25-50 emails per day, and send 5-10.

As mentioned before, I think it's really important to define what you consider 'an e-mail'.

- Do you count spam?
- Do you count newsletters? I used to receive about 10 newsletters a day. Now i replaced them with RSS feeds. I receive less e-mail, but i'm actually spending more time reading that stuff. I've added so many blogs over time that I'm receiving some 300 RSS posts a day.
- Do you count chainmails? (which i rarely spend more than 20 seconds on)
- Do you count automatic notifications (like the mails OP receives because of his admin job) ?
- Are we counting e-mails or gmail conversations?

Not counting spam, newsletters, automatic notifications and counting actual e-mails (not gmail conversations) I receive 20-40 e-mails a day and send 10-20.

On a side-note: Something that bothers me is that number of e-mails received often seems to be a bit of a status symbol. "I'm a very busy man, because I receive more e-mail than you do" Well, maybe that's true, or maybe you and your friends and company are just using e-mail terribly inefficient.
I like to organize and share information via google docs and wiki's. Some of my friends prefer to do it all via e-mail. Obviously they're getting and sending a lot more e-mail than I am.

For me I do not count spam, that runs between 200-500/day
I don't get many newsletters, so those aren't in my lists either, I get maybe 2/month that come as e-mail.
I never or very rarely get any chainmail and those all end up inspam so are not counted.
I do count automatic notifications I have to deal with (paypal notes of money received that means I have to ship something and similar)

I don't understand what you mean by gmail conversations. I get all my e-mail, even from gmail into my mailclient. It's all e-mail and I deal with it that way.

But I also download all gmail and do not let it stay on the servers, I hate cloud computing!

I receive between 60-80 emails per day and more during those seasons when project deadlines draw near and I'm in touch with other leaders, hotels, conference centers, speakers, etc.

One of the emails I look forward to each morning is the email I receive from my 72 year old dad. He and mom had 6 kids and each morning he writes an email about his day and asks us kids about ours. We all reply to it and share briefly about what we'll be doing that day. Although we're spread all across the USA and Canada, we stay in touch with each other in this way. And because we all have wicked senses of humor, often we respond to something funny one of us writes and we all have a good laugh.

Getting 10-20 emails a day now and being subscribed to 8 RSS-feeds that´s enough for me.
In the past I had to manage 100s of mails a day and scanned nearly 200 feeds.

The power of less has driven me to cut down months ago. It´s feels so much better.

There are tricks to drop blown communication, give them a try.
