Can SM list be used instead of tickler?
Not an answer, but after just starting my tickler yesterday and trying to see how it'll fit into my system, I was struck by how many ways I can accomplish the same thing and how I don't always do the same thing and probably should. I think the tickler is a big improvement for me, and was the missing part of my system for what to do with
physical things that I'm not ready to deal with. As I was cleaning off my desk yesterday I came across some single pieces of paper that I wrote things on when I was initially setting up my desk for GTD long, long ago. Since these things that I wasn't ready to deal with right now were written on single sheets and easy to drop into my tickler, I did. Then I was reading something somewhere which led me to think that I have no less than four different ways to 'postpone' something into the future. (Probably more). The reason the tickler is such an important piece of the puzzle is because it's the only option for something physical. But if something isn't physical I can:
-write it down and put it into my tickler
-put it into OF with a future start date
-put it onto my SM list (which I keep a separate electronic document for)
-put it onto my calendar (ical)
Since the one thing I CONSISTENTLY check and use is ical, if I want to make sure I look at/do something, it goes into ical. I realize that there is probably a better place for some things to go because they aren't actual appointments and aren't 100% day specific, but since it's the most trusted part of my system, I rely on it more than other parts.
I'm going to spend some time thinking about this and decide if I need to consciously make a change to where I put some things.
