Smallest phone with voice recorder that you can do GTD with.

Hi all,

Rats! I just found out that the new Palm Pre does not have a voice recorder. So that rules out that one. I want a Palm Treo phone with Palm OS (700p, 755p), but I am open to other phones. The main requirements are:

1-Must be able to have tasks in some way so that I can do GTD.
2-Must have a voice recorder.
3-Must have the 1 and 2 from above and must be as SMALL as possible.

I'm on the Verizon network, but am willing to change. I'm thinking of maybe getting a Palm Treo 755p.

Why a voice recorder and not something like JOTT? Voice recording requires more steps (record, load, transcribe, create action), where JOTT can record and automatically transcribe a note directly into your GTD system (in some cases) or right into your e-mail. It's a HUGE timesaver and it works on every phone.

That being said, it's best for quick notes and messages. If you're looking for more in-depth recording (conversations, interviews, training sessions, etc), then I can certainly see your point.

How about using a BlackBerry Pearl (smallest BB you can get) in combination with NextAction! Pro (Pro includes voice actions)?

I am using it on a Curve which works great for me :)
 
There's a great free service called Braincast (google it) where you call a number and record your message, then play it back as a Quicktime file the next time you're at a computer.

It's not time limited like Jott.
 
There is nothing better than the iPhone on the horizon right now. It surpassed Palm a few months ago because of the number of ways to customize it -- there are around 12,000 apps in the App Store right now.

I was on Palm from 1999 to 2008 and will not go back -- even with this new Pre one.
 
But the 'slide to open' of the iPhone drives me crazy with the voice recording

The slide to open means you always have to look at the iPhone to record, which is unsafe while driving and just a pain. Also, I have both iTalk and SpeakEasy and both require some kind of filing or saving with each recording. Again having to look and the screen and tap something.

I'm missing my little sony stand alone recorder because it was so easy and quick to use with one hand and without looking. With that thing I could feel the record button. Obviously not possible with the iPhone. I'm thinking about digging it out just to use while driving because I can't make the iPhone work for that.
 
I'm going to second Jott. I have found it's easier to call Jott and leave a message to myself than it is to fiddle with my phone's system (start and stop, etc).
 
Shortly after I had put in a good word for Jott, I received an email stating that they will no longer be offering free service. Just an fyi.

No longer free, but hardly expensive. I have a pay as you go plan and $10 lasted me from when they went to a pay service until just a few weeks ago (i.e. several months).

Also, as of right now (January 17, 2009) they are offering a week free trial.

BlackBerry + Vlingo could work

Hi there,

I'm new to these forums, but this is a thread on which I might have some insight. I have a BlackBerry Curve with a program called Vlingo. Vlingo is a free text-to-speech program that can be used for a number of different things. Simply hold a side button and speak things like, "New Task: Call Mom about moving furniture on Friday", and the task will be created. That may meet your needs, as the BlackBerry also has a voice recorder for longer recordings.

In the interests of disclosure, I do work for RIM, the makers of the BlackBerry, in tech support, but this is what I do with my personal device. Also, a caveat with Vlingo is that it will only work when you have data coverage, as the translation to text is done by a remote server. All things considered, though, it makes task entry tremendously easier when I'm driving or cannot type.

Vlingo can also be used for lots of other things, too, like sending texts or e-mails, searching the web, updating Twitter, creating memos, et cetera.
