Ooh, an EDC discussion! I dig!
As a sales manager for luxury wines & spirits, my EDC is quite tailored to my specific role, but I imagine not wildly different from other field-based operators. A typical work day would include the following never-leave-home-without items:
•
Bag: I carry a
Timbuk2 Division Laptop Bag. It's compact enough to carry around all day (I'm on my feet pounding the pavement most days) with just the right amount of compartments for my need-to-carry items without tempting me to overstuff the bag.
•
Tech: MacBook Air M3 (Midnight); iPad Air M2 w/ Smart Folio Keyboard (the OG that you can flip like a book); iPhone 17; Apple Watch 10, AirPods Pro 2. If I know I won't be doing any major Excel, CRM or computer admin work until I'm back at my home office, I'll skip the laptop. The iPad is all I need to shoot off emails in between account visits, or to present a digital asset during a product presentation. For GTD, my list manager is currently Apple Reminders, with reference being split between Notes/iCloud Drive and OneNote/OneDrive for personal and work, respectively. Apple Calendar does the job for centralizing my work, personal, family, and MBA calendars.
•
Water Bottle:
Owalla FreeSip Stainless Steel bottle in Shy Marshmallow (24oz) - I try to glug 4 refills per day!
•
Field Book & Pen: I buy the cheaper
Field Book (vs Field Notes) from Amazon in bulk and clip one of
these mini pens to it and carry it in my inside breast pocket. Whenever I'm meeting with a customer I take it out and keep it on the table to signal that I'm listening and ready to capture anything important to follow up on. I'll transfer the notes to OneNote or my CRM later, but I like the classic symbolism of hand writing notes when I'm face to face with someone.
•
Leather Folio (8.5x11): I take a stack of 10 "sell sheets" with me everyday -- one-pagers that tell the story of my brand and summarize my product portfolio and pricing. Again, I like the symbolism of taking one of these sheets out of a beautiful leather folio in front of the customer. It communicates the attention to detail and elevated experience they'll have working with me and my products.
•
Business Cards & Case: I have all the digital contact sharing tools, but to me, you still can't beat the tactile experience of handing a physical business card to someone - especially from inside a gorgeous case. Mine is from
Leatherology and it feels and looks luxe.
•
Refresh Kit: Since I'm generally out in the elements most of the day (I primarily work in city metro areas and don't own a car), I keep a mesh zippy bag with breath mints, eye drops, hand sanitizer, floss, lip balm, mini-deodorant (and face wipes in the summer).
•
Samples: This one is super specific to my job but on days when I have a tasting presentation scheduled, I have to carry sample bottles of wine or spirits in a custom rolling Pelican Case. It's a bit unwieldily on busy city sidewalks, but the bottles are held securely inside, and the hard outer shell looks badass. When I take my wines or spirits out of this thing, it communicates that I take these items seriously, and that they're luxury products meant to be protected and savored.
There you have it, the everyday carry of a bougie booze salesman in the city (hey, that sounds like a good title for a TV show...)!
