Your in-tray is a holding pattern

I have just introduced the in-tray clearing process to my team. One of the participants offered "Your in-tray is like a holding pattern". How appropriate given the runway -> 50,000 ft analogy for review.

What happens to a plane left too long in a holding pattern?

The same goes for things left in your in-tray.

So to push the analogy to the breaking point, emergency in-tray scanning is like mid-air refueling :)

I think it would be more like putting the aircraft back on course, after wandering off course.
