Photo caption lost during transfer to PC

Thread someone else made- same problem as myself

reads "
I tried both transfer methods with the SETTINGS > PHOTOS >TRANSFER TO MAC OR PC setting set to "Automatic" and "Keep Originals". Neither setting retained the caption after the photo was transferred to the PC.

I tried a third method: email the photo to myself on the iphone and then download the photo onto my PC from the email. When I did this, the caption was retained and showed in the title field!

Why doesn't the transfer of photos from iPhone to PC retain the caption using methods 1 and 2?"

reads

"When you download photos from the device, the original 8mage file will be sent. It does not include the caption, because it is created later as a part of the current version. Photos is supporting a lossless workflow, where the original image file never will be modified. When you mail a photo, you are mailing the current version."

same problem as myself Tim - saying ... - says reverted to doing - was E-mailing the images over to transfer, so I should try that?

says When you sync with USB you are not able to keep captions.

Things worried about are:

on my iphone - I have types of captions on the photos.

Will these captions get saved if I transfer them all my cable (off of i cloud - onto transfer them onto photos app on laptop? I am not sure)
- a way prevent this accidentally getting destroyed - would be - test just transferring an image with a caption and see if it goes through.

I'm not sure -albums have already saved on phone (small amount ) would also get saved /formatted through.

Should I take a pic of what they were?
or - see option to actually share/transfer a specific album from phone [-see when - try using USB - doesn't seem be option to save album categories they were in with photos] .

worth options - phone apple icloud link [ -doesn't work could show pic]

or save files with phone?
View attachment 1891
Tried the option - when I save on phone icloud - it doesn't , the data doesn't seem to show in icloud website for some reason.

I am ideally trying sort group all photos anyway on laptop

@13 13 literal - further next action ideas are:

I should try to research more on the apple website if there's an better method or option to be able to transfer photos
1)Try search if information on net like articles.
2) then if not try search/find fourm apple and ask .

doing this - because I want to keep the captions with my photos or images.

Is it worth I upload more images/photos in post here - about problems experiencing trying to transfer sync an i phone apple probably i phone 8/7 and and a HP laptop?

Tim,

I’m unclear as to exactly what you are using but if you are on an Apple Mac then the Captions will show up in the Apple Photos app.

You can also see them in Finder Info as Item Description.

If you’re on a Windows PC then I can’t advise further as I haven’t used one of those since before the iPhone was invented!

With regards to where to store the photos, my advice would be to store them on a hard drive, and back it up to a cloud service. Dropbox will do this for you with an appropriate plan.

Good luck.

If you are on a Windows pc then you could try iMazing. I believe there is a version for Windows, and that the latest version (which I don’t have on my Mac) transfers various metadata (but not sure if that includes Captions).

There’s a trial version so worth a go?

Yeah I discussed this with other users - why I have a huge collection which I just plan on putting one copy on hard drive ' s

Yeah it could be worth I try this and see if it includes captions (which would solve my problem writing about above).

Appreciate your feedback here.' s

I wouldn't for example see negatives just having this pictures stored on an empty expansion drive?
Until you have 2.9 GB of saved pictures that are cataloged and another 4 GB awaiting cataloging. Then you become much more ruthless in what you will delete. <smile>

Hi dk

I tried downloading your link - see that software - actually when on the interface it is actually able ot show "caption: " from the phone, in side screen - but I can't seem to see if there's a way, be able download this information

my NA here - is continue try use the 50 picture trial it offers
-further try test this soft ware

if this software in the full version- offers some option to actually be able to get the caption data -e.g. be able see it in photo interface, or export the text some whole then I would be willing to pay for it?

Hi Tim,

Export the photo using the Export icon in the bottom right corner of the screenshot you shared, then check the exported file on your computer. Can you see the caption there?

If not it probably won’t do it, but as this is outside the remit of this forum it might be best to ask the iMazing support team if it is possible to do what you want.

Hi Tim,

You need to find a view that shows the file information. I don't know what the application WPS is.

The last time I used Windows you could locate a file using Explorer, right click on the file which would give you a contextual (fly out) menu with Properties as one of the available actions. Clicking this would show lots of information about the photo, and may show whether the caption is present or not.

It may be a Menu item now, so have a look under the File menu and see if Properties is listed there.

The proper name for the information about a file is metadata, so if there's a menu item for this then check that out.

If anyone reading this knows how to do this please contribute as I've not used Windows since before the iPhone was invented!

Good luck,
Doug

The other thing you could do is share the photo with me and I can take a look on my Mac to see if I can see it. If it's there you'll still need to find a way of viewing it on your computer, but at least you'll know that the info is retained (or not).

You be willing to?
How would I share it to you?

Im not sure you understand
or I

Your writing : you would be willing to try to open/look the files I have been writing about here (examples given where shared - ones which caption information) on your mac (which is apple) - just to see if mac/apple products have feature ability to give this permission

but myself Tim don't have an apple/mac that isn't a phone - so ...

What would I then do?

Hi Tim,

According to this article the Title field is where you should see the caption, so it looks like it is not transferred.

Photo captions article

I’m not sure there is anything you can do about that I’m afraid.

I just looked at that article right now - it isn't having the images viewable
made in 2013

Oh right?

Is it to do with - I opened properties up with the image saved as WPS version of a file?

But the caption - showed, was viewable in the type imazing app;icaton

DK - think problem is - I just opened a normal type jpeg image

the type of imazing application showed the caption- cos had other details (from saved phone) "

I contacted iMazing who say the app does not transfer the caption. They are aware of this and have had a number of feature requests for it to be added, and say it is on their list.

No timeline given though.

It seems the Captions on an iPhone aren’t very useful as a form of capture device if you want to transfer them out of the Apple ecosystem.

I’m not familiar with your new phone but going forward it would be more robust to add the captions directly into the JPEG on your computer, so transfer to your PC first then add the captions.

You can do this in the title field of the Properties menu.

Good luck with it.

Its not in my memory why your writing about my new phone right now - type of p30 version Huwahi Phone

"going forward it would be more robust to add the captions directly into the JPEG on your computer, so transfer to your PC first then add the captions." Oh right - to do that I would have to implement a habit/system of transferring the pictures weekly - but right now I'm not in a position to do that (because I have built up clutter , loads of pictures on two phones that I have for example)
You can do this in the title field of the Properties menu.
Right
Good luck with it.

Maybe @cfoley here because links to what was previously writing about previous day about the topic of habits " STN

P.S.

after thoughts

Maybe its possible there actually another company software on the net - which does offer ability to do captions?
is there a chance that someone e.g. anyone is going recommend me this?

There are lots of software companies for adding captions, but only on the computer, not on the phone. These are all specialist photo software companies though, usually with a significant price or subscription.

There may be an app for the Huwaei phone that will allow what you want to do, but again I’m not familiar with that system, so can’t advise.

I would start with applying the weekly habit to all new photos.

I would treat the backlog as a separate project. Setting aside a fixed block each week to work on the backlog might help you make regular progress on it.
