Draft short version of thread creating entirely on topic of passwords

Preface reading explaining this thread
Dear users reading:
The idea occurred to me that one of the best things to do for myself would be actually split up the thread I originally wrote about passwords in to two , i.e. the longer one with extra details posted in off topic group forum section, give hyper link ,in short version also for those interested - in order to keep and follow to the rules of forum, to keep the discussion GTD focused.

Then post a short version in the main GTD thread section: [which will try to upload edit in ASAP afterwards HERE NOW - [https://forum.gettingthingsdone.com...anagement-trying-to-balance-meditation.18695/] ]

GTD short version post about passwords
‘I have it in real life -
When I last had what felt like was problem with my password system, I left a note in real life, meaning to create some post about it [In heigh n sight now
And - thought Twice that wrote it in asana, but not sure that I can actually find reference it anymore
Basically myself Tim started using a new password system Since a point in time where I was writing in E-mail to a person called Daniel F in 2023 February , (who also completed chelation proctors, but that's for another story not on this topic, for long version of this post)

I wrote a reply - where I mentioned if had idea for keeping passwords :

Do you have any recommendations for a system of keeping passwords use for technological devices?
For keeping track of banking?

He replied:"
I have a system for passwords. I have a base word, plus a number that's always the same, then I add in the name of the company involved at the end.
For example assume my base word is : Superbanana
Base number 7
Company name: amazon

Therefore password for amazon is : Superbanana7amazon
If was my bank it would be : Superbanana7santander
If was Argos it would be: Superbanana7argos

Note: one of the letters needs to be a capital letter, so I just use the first S as my capital letter.
Note: sometime they need a special character too: so I add # at the end.

There are various apps on iPhone and my laptop, but I generally use my system as it’s easily rememberable.

Any variation of the above will be fine: just remember your base number word or words.

Superbanana is not my base word:-))))
I used to have terrible short term memory issues, thats why I kept a journal."

And since I - saw the e-mail with danny, saw his replies - myself Tim actually used in real life a type of red note book “I will also show a picture off” 1729799880566.png- where basically would document or track all passwords using for everything digital in my life in a certain format, in a templated way (with the date)
1729799895874.png
# * *1 in heighn sight - now I actually think to myself - I may have already had idea maybe 6 to 12 months ago to make a new password system (when wrote with the highlighter maybe I should digitalize) and I left a poll down below - do you think that would be best option?
1729800137893.png
1729800149517.png

Purpose of this thread had multiple things :

1 - in a practical service to myself to make a new password system for myself (in order to remove the negatives of previous system I was following (of wasted time having to reoccurring a certain amount of times - use the red book to check back more than I need

Or 2 literally not being able to read the original writing data I documented tracked in book (from using bad handwriting continually in the book
And V says - I will also try share picture of idea I started maybe one to two weeks ago - where I just thought to myself because ‘this red book’ is not best illegible anymore, just going try something different actually and put new data - all together in a type of opaque wallet from single pieces paper using a book… but this was not a permanent solution to the problem.
Then a third purpose of this thread would also be : feel I’m unsure what do do with my red book
With the problem I have : where because a certain X amount of the writing is not fully eligible - means.
‘I have certain writing in the book passwords maybe want to keep (and think to myself -its probably not best that I keep this red book - can other users confirm this?)
So only solutions to this would be stuff such as: write out new passwords in a new note book (like in something 2 mins a day , could implement - while waiting for other users to suggest other ideas).

The above paragraph was written before # * *1 - where - I had idea in my head tell me best thing to do is probably just try to make the entire new version digital to start with

P.S. for myself- maybe help if I added a picture showing an example - of how the note book looks keeping out the text details? (with messy writing I was using, or exactly flaws in previous system I was using)

This is not suitable for anything where security matters. If one password gets leaked, then it would be trivially easy for someone to guess your passwords everywhere.

In my opinion, one alternative is missing: using a password manager!
I added
use a password manager " to the poll

That's what I originally did myself on my previous laptop - but then it also got to a certain level, where the type of application I used Kee Pass - felt I was having negatives from it also

so idea came - that's actually what I start implementing then, a new pass manager in 2 mins at end of the day ? "

Right - well maybe I should share that to Danny P literally in new e-mail in less two mins

Myself Tim used this "method" you quote tho - for about a year tho, for mostly everything says voice "

My password manager of choice is 1password (also because of the family solution), and I am very happy with that!

"website is : https://1password.com/

- the website looks better than the two previous password manager websites suggested by users, looks more clear or simpler - so makes me think the application is more simple? - so means I am on the gut feeling of investing my time looking at this more? "

I haven't checked the other alternatives, but I can confirm that I find 1password both user friendly and flexible when it comes to Windows, android etc.
However, 1password is not a free solution, but I don't mind paying some money for security!

Seeing three users respond give good feedback to this thread @radioman and @cfoley - makes me
Motivated - to spare , try to show the specific problem details exactly I was having with the "note pad" system , which shared pictures off (which is a task in itself, might take 15 mins to fully complete

And update them - that I updated the first thread begging here with link to the (long version of this post if interested?)

Well, I wouldn't say I'm rich, but I respect that not all have the possibility to pay for software. I am all about open source solution and I'm sure that those alternatives are just fine! I believe that 1password is around 80 Euros a year or so for the family option.

seeing no one reply here I am disappointed '

to further this - if had replied
imagine I would have tried to explain further litearl things (which are hard to put into words)

basically, is this: that I wouldn't be able to say or tell exactly how many times I've exactly had to reference back to using the "notebook shown in picture"
How would I?

"but its probably been more regular than I would have liked (with problems with short term memory) - where I feel like it happens I really do forget passwords or account information regularly (which I am not actively using regular - you understand

they only passwords I seem to remember with my mind would be ones which I am regularly logging in signing in with the details - like on a weekly basis:

such as my my work application programme
or things such as i cloud account
maybe crono-meter or types of fitness tacker apps on phone which use

or stuff like PIN for logging into devices digital phone or PC
or PINs in general which are not more than about seven digits?

"I mean - I would have to scan over my entire passwords accounts details users lists (to have confidence - be able to tell which ones I would feel confident or meh or unlikely remember - which has like also a bunch off one off websites per say - such as type website companies (for purchasing supplements - doing online order

I mean the purposes of myself writing this now
is - basically

"voice says - I should be focusing on using a new password manager then, as written above literally

STN ? "

Take a look at Proton Pass.

after [https://proton.me/pass/security] - I selected get proton pass

(where I was able to log in with the already proton e-mail option that I have) - and took me to a screen where says download the proton pass browser extension (which I did) (is that the only way which proton pass works- in a browser extension? you can't access it by a web link?

and I have it installed now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm4DCAjePOM - I watched 2 mins of that video , felt like didn't understand fully what it was trying to say about Alysis
was it saying something - when , or if you had made a proton pass new account to use proton pass then it would have made an e-mail alysis? Why would you want that, what is a alysis suppose to do? is there any downside of myself using the proton e-mail account I already had I wonder (basically was key thing I was thinking?)?

1made me think , where see option "import from existing manager " - so I have my old kee pass data saved on my hard drive I could import says voice '

The next actions for this - would be - to start by adding to proton pass my most regular passwords I use, "

and then chronologically try to add more over time?

WE?

2 Maybe I should ask mark

A password manager serves several purposes:

It's safer than writing down passwords on paper for others to see

It creates stronger passwords that humans usually do

It remembers the passwords for you, so you don't have to

Also, keep in mind that users of this forum have other obligations than contributing in the forum...
